MEET THE AGENT - Sonny Kwan

What do you most enjoy about your career as a Realtor?
Having the ability to teach and educate people who never realized that they would be able to become homeowners. The fact that what we do actually will change someone's life!
What other careers did you do before entering the field of real estate?
I worked in the family restaurant business most of my childhood life, then went off on my own and did automotive work, body repair and mechanics, short stint driving a bus for the transit authority, then worked for the City of Seattle.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Seattle, WA in an area called Beacon Hill in a house my parents bought in 1971 2 years after we moved here from Hong Kong. They bought it for $25,000 and had $90.00 mortgage payments on a $600.00 combined monthly income.
When did you buy your first property?
I acquired my first property in 1988 at the age of 23. and through the years bought move up properties and investment homes, then eventually started to invest in apartments and commercial lots.
What advice would you give to a first time home buyer?
Do your homework and find a good agent who has done what you ultimately want to achieve from owning a home. meaning, if you want to be a landlord, ask an agent about their experience and how you can get there.
What are your activities outside of work?
I like to give back to the community that helped me get to where I am today, volunteering and being out and about. meeting people , traveling, learning something new, cycling, food, wine, and new friends and relationships.
What is your favorite Seattle - area restaurant or eatery?
I love experiencing new eateries that are hole in walls type of places, mom and pop style cafes where the food is top notch and has a at home feel. One of my favorites is Le-Panier in the Pike Place market
Describe your sense of humor.
I'm a practical joker and love to see the reaction from people. sometimes i just like to sit and watch people react to situations and what they would do. More on that later....
FREE PARKING IN DOWNTOWN SEATTLE. No such thing anymore anywhere in Seattle, with these new pay as you park solar powered money generating machines for the City of Seattle.
These new parking gadgets are a bit difficult to use, if your are not computer savvy, then forget about parking in the city. If you can't read english, throw that out entirely and take the bus.
You need to either pay with a credit card or shove dimes, nickles and quarters into a slot that barely wants to accept them, then push a green button and it prints out a ticket you display on your windshield.(improper placement or placement on the wrong side of the window will get you a ticket)
No more parking at a space for 5 minutes to grab coffee and go, some of these machines require that you pay a minimum of one hour. What do you do with the rest of the time stamped on your ticket? You can always leave it on the machine and hope someone else can benefit by the time you didn't use.
Don't dare roll down your window while this sticker is displayed, otherwise it will end up forever lost in the panel between your doors!
What are your thoughts about these new automated parking enforcers? Do they work for you?
