The Value of Linked In

09-02-09

Do you know what an expert is...anyone who knows more than you do on a subject. :) I never really believed that comment until recently. Here's the thing, when it comes to social media and networking with people in business or just regular old folk, what you have to know is that the personal touch is really the key.

I joined Linked In a number of years ago, but I didn't do anything with it. And truth be known, I was actually annoyed when I started getting requests to be "linked in" and I think in part it was because I'm already connected everywhere else, so i figured, Linked In was a waste of my time...that is until recently.

Recently I decided that I would start seeing what the fuss was all about, and do you know what happened - (no of course you don't :) - that is unless you're some mind reader and if you are, then why are you reading this because you already know what I'm going to say) (I'm a parenthetical speaker even in writing.. :))

Anyway, what I discovered was that I can make money by connecting to others on Linked In. ( I know, pretty amazing huh)

Take this morning, as just an example. I had this nice author contact me and wanted to know about Active Christian Media. So I asked for his number so I could call him. AND THEN I DID THE UNTHINKABLE... I called him. :) Anyway, we chatted about an hour, and at the end of the call I offered to do something nice for him and I know without a shadow of a doubt that he will be giving me some money.

But here's the other thing, it's not just the connection on Linked In, but the GROUPS on Linked IN are are wealth of resources at your fingertips. Like for example, did you all know that there is a group called Real Estate Open Networkers - eRealEstate.com ? Well, there is. And I joined it because of all of you here in Active Rain.

See, even though I'm not a REALTOR (by the way, did you all notice how I capitalized that?) I heard someplace that REALTORS are picky about non REALTORS using the word REALTORS, unless it's all CAPITALIZED. (sorry I had to CAPITALIZE, CAPITALIZED)....

Anyway, I joined that group because I want to be able to offer you some resources, if and when the opportunity arises. By the way, you probably don't know this but one of my nicknames is "super researcher" - so if you ever need info on anything, let me know and I can probably help you out.

So are you on LINKED IN yet? If not, WHY NOT...get yourself over there and get involved. And it's fun :)

If you REALLY want to connect with me on there, you can, just search my name and I'm there.

Was this post helpful to you? Please comment. I thrive on feedback. :)

This is a modern day comic showing what it would've been like way back then. I think this is very clever. Free Range
Last night my husband and I were talking about a street named WoodLawn, and I told him that the street wasn't really a lawn because if it was made out of wood there would be no way that would be possible. Anyway, you can see where I'm going with this...

Remembering Boswell My Cat...

08-31-09
Stacy Harp

Well, I am never sure where to begin, so I will begin by saying that this is a day that I knew would come eventually, and now it is here. I believe my 16 year old cat Boswell has died. As some of you know, because I wrote about him before, he was sick and I had to diaper him, and eventually we had to put him outside just because there was nothing that we could do to keep him clean and our house clean. And yesterday he wasn't home most of the day, which was unusual because he normally sleeps on the porch. Then he did show up really late at night, and as I held him, he was limp and not moving much. He felt like a bag of bones, and he wasn't talking much, and he didn't eat anything either. Then we couldn't find him last night, and this morning and all day today he hasn't been seen. I think he went away to die. It's just a gut feeling, and if I'm wrong and he returns, I'll let you know, but I think he's gone.

If you're a pet owner, you realize how hard it is when you love a pet and they die. Boswell was my first real pet, after Toby a cat I had a few years. But Boswell has been with my husband and I since our first year of marriage. He walked with me through many rough years in my life, and he served as a loving pet very well. I'll miss him, but I think he knew his time was up.

We named him Boswell because Adventures in Odyssey - a Focus on the Family production for children - had an episode years ago about a cat named Boswell, who the main character of the show had to babysit. It was a very cute episode. We also named him Boswell because he was a boy, turns out if he was a girl, her name, as it were, would've been Tuesday because that's the cage he was in when we adopted him.

Jeff Corbett's Use of the "F" Word....and the Staff of AR Making It A Feature

I thought about this for a day and decided that I was going to write about it because frankly I find it offensive and just flat out unprofessional for ANY professional in ANY field to use foul languange.

And it's a sad commentary on our society and in this case, the AR staff for highlighting a post that has the "F" word prominently in it's title. It makes me sick. I'm sure Jeff Corbett's post is a worthy read, but I have to tell you that I skipped it because if he can't describe the mortgage industry with a word that is not a curse word, it causes me pause to go and see what other vile language is coming out of him.

What ever happened to men being a gentleman, and not even THINKING about saying such filth around women??? I know, I KNOW... all civility is lost in our crude culture and sadly, the Staff at AR apparently doesn't care that their highlighting a post with one of the filthiest words in the title, could even be offensive to anyone.

I do not care that they put a *** in the word to cancel it out, because we all KNOW what the word is for Pete's sake!!!

Am I alone in this, or are there others who get offended at the frequent use of such filthy language?

And this also raises the question, why do some people like Jeff Corbett apparently, lack the vocabulary to describe something with a decent word, rather than a curse word? I would think that with all of the dictionaries online that one would be able to find a descriptive word that is appropriate.

And don't even get me started on using that language where children are present.....

One Great Reason To Join Twitter

My regular readers are fully aware of how much I love Twitter - I really do, and here is just one more reason I love Twitter, and ONE great reason you should log on and make yourself a Twitter account today. Go to http://www.twitter.com right now, if you are not on Twitter. Seriously DO IT...

Here's why - if YOU TRAVEL out of state, or even in state, you will want to follow @JetBlueCheeps because EVERY MONDAY, yes that is right, EVERY MONDAY, Jet Blue offers some ridiculously LOW airfare prices, and they are for a limited number of seats. I plan on checking it out because I love to fly Jet Blue in the first place, but even more so, I love to save money.

Also, if you like to fly United Airlines, they are also using Twitter to offer special discounted rates, but you must be paying attention in order to get those rates. Sign up to follow United Airlines at @unitedairlines

Pretty cool huh :)

Oh - by the way, you can follow me on Twitter = just look over there to your right on my sidebar, all the links are there.

And here is an unrelated question, does anyone know if there is a font function here in the AR interface, I hate typing so small and not having a choice of fonts and colors is boring. Am I missing something here?
