Healthy Home Insulation (HHI) has been serving the eastern half of North Carolina, from Greensboro to the coast, for over 3 years. HHI offers energy efficient spray foam insulation called "Icynene".
Icynene is an open cell, ½ lb foam insulation, which is up to four times more energy efficient than fiber glass or cellulose insulation. Green Homes Raleigh NC
If you're considering building or buying a green-built home in the Raleigh, NC area, you probably have some specific ideas about what's involved in a green home. Or maybe you just know that a green home is better for the environment.
Each of the five green home certification programs in North Carolina has its own levels and specifications of "greenness".
If you're considering a green home in the Raleigh area, you'll most likely see certification that involves the Green Home Builders of the Triangle program. Each green home must be independently validated and certified by a third party inspection agency. If you don't see a green home certificate, your home may not be certified green, even if it does contain many green elements.
There are three basic levels of certification, that can be attained by collecting "points" in a variety of building areas, such as:
A green home reaches bronze level certification when a total of 257 points have been earned, with the minimum amounts in each category.
Green homes with Bronze Level Certification may not have the same features and amenities - for instance, the green home can earn 5 points for minimizing slope disturbance, or 6 points for optimizing the homes location for solar resources by placing the long side of the home within 30 degrees of due south.
A Bronze Level Green Home does not often have a solar water heater or solar photovoltaic power source, but can be the least expensive type of green home built in the Raleigh NC area, depending on the choices made.
A green home in the Raleigh NC area reaches silver level certification when a total of 415 points have been earned, with again minimum amounts in each category.
Thus 61% more points must be earned to reach Silver certification - so some could argue that such a home is 61% greener!
It depends on the green homeowner or home buyers preferences and priorities - again, the points can be earned in a variety of ways.
A sealed attic is worth 8 points in the Energy Efficiency category, as is a sealed crawlspace and a solar hot water heater. From the chart above, a Silver Level Green Home requires 62 points in this category, so a combination of many different features are needed.
To earn a Gold Level Green Home Certification in the Raleigh NC area, the green home must score a total of 549 points, or more than double that of a Bronze Green Home.
Most Gold Level Green Homes that I have seen in the Raleigh area are in the $700K or higher range.
In Water Efficiency, one can gain 7 points for collecting and reusing rainwater, and 7 points for weather-based irrigation controllers (computerized).
As you can see, the types of green homes available vary quite a bit, and the combinations of green features can be almost endless.

Looking for a great neighborhood to build a home near Raleigh, NC?
North Fort in Clayton, NC is an all-brick community with gently rolling meadow and wooded lots, a pond, and much more.
Homes are currently selling in the mid $200s to the mid $500s.
Homes in the neighborhood range from about 2100 sq ft to about 4200 sq ft.
All new construction must be at least 2500 sq ft.
Amenities vary depending on price point of home.
Some lots are suitable for daylight or walk-out basement homes.
The North Fort community has been slowly built since 2000.
As in most communities with larger size lots, well and septic are required.
HOA fees are only $65 per year for most homes, or about $5.50 per month.
Available lots range from .81 to 1.38 acres.
Eight lots are currently available at $39,000 - one of the best values in the area for about an acre of land in an established community.
North Fort lots 74, 75, 76, 89, 90, 91, 95, and 101 are listed at $39,000 each.

Turner Farms in Garner, NC is a very pretty community with a variety of meadow and wooded homesites.
There are plenty of tall trees for a more private feel.
The Turner Family originally owned 1200 acres in the area, with some deeds dating back to 1810.
In 1974, the Turner Farms community was first laid out, with a combination of tall, green trees, rolling pasture, and wooded areas.
Turner Farms has a wide variety of homes, from 1400 sq ft to over 4300 sq ft.
Homes are offered in the $200s to the low $500s.
The newest phase in the Turner Farms community is set to open in November 2008.
Lot sizes average .5 to 2.0 acres.
Community water is provided, and as in most communities with lots .5 acres or larger, septics are required.
The new phase offers a mixture of meadow and wooded lots, as in previous phases.
Turner Farms is located off Hwy 50, just past Lake Benson.
Directions:
From Raleigh, take Hwy 50 south. Just past Ten Ten Rd, turn left onto Turner Farms Rd. New phase is southeast of the main subdivision.
Turner Farms offers a community pool and tennis courts.
HOA fees are $350/year, or about $30/month.
Two lots are currently available in the existing phases - Lot #354 and #346. Asking prices are $70K and $75K.
