Advice from Steve: Clothes Dryer Fire Prevention

09-01-08
Steve Gors

You may think of doing your laundry as a relatively low impact and low danger activity. But if your dryer is not properly installed and maintained, it could well be a disaster waiting to happen.

There are thousands of house fires started every year by clothes dryers. These happen in a couple of ways.

Lint Build-up Clogging Vents

Cleaning out your lint trap and other lint in the laundry line is important for more than just making your dryer run more efficiently. Dryer lint left unchecked can translate to a build up of lint inside the machine. While you may not realize this, that lint is extremely flammable. It's essentially very airy cloth remnants and doesn't take much to ignite. Just a spark or two from your machine can start a fire that can quickly get out of hand.

In addition to your regular cleaning of the lint trap, you also should make sure to have a professional come out at least once a year to inspect and do a complete cleaning.

Lint and Debris in the Line

Not all lint gets caught up in the machine. Some of it continues out of your dryer and into the chutes and tubes leading from the dryer to the outside of your home. There are numerous points along the path where it can get stuck, on the walls, around a curve or even at the termination point in the vent. This is another area you need to have regularly cleaned by a professional to keep build up to a minimum.

Lint Near and Ignition Point

If you have a gas-powered clothes dryer, you need to be even more aware of the threats of fire connected to this appliance and keeping it clean. Since natural gas appliances have pilot lights, that means there is already a flame waiting for any lint to catch on fire.

More than Lint

It's not just lint that may be clogging up your dryer vent and ducts, but this is an area that bugs and rodents love. If they can create an access from the outside portion of the vent, they will be happy to move in to the line and set up shop. Many a homeowner has been surprised to find a mouse nest or even a bird nest inside their dryer vent.

The Fix

The easiest way to make sure your home is safe from a fire threat related to your dryer is to make sure the dryer and the line are well maintained. You should look for a certified dryer exhaust duct technician to take care of this for you.

Possible Solution to Bug and Rodent Problems: Dryer Vent Inspection, Cleeaning and Repair

If you have a bug problem in your house, you have probably called exterminators or tried your own bug traps to get rid of the pesky critters. But this is just a temporary solution until more bugs come in to be caught. The real way to get rid of bugs is to stop them from getting into your home in the first place. While you may think you have closed off all access points to your home, one place you may not have thought off is your clothes dryer vent.

It would make sense that you don't think of the clothes dryer vent, as it's not even a part of the dryer that's in your house. It's the end of the line for the air that is coming out of your clothes dryer and it's on the outside of your house.

The vent portion of your hot air extraction system is usually a small plastic piece that has a hard top, screened sides and a bottom that is attached to the tubing coming out of your dryer. The hard top is to keep rain, dust and pests out of your dryer line. If this piece is missing you have essentially created a large open door for any pests to come in. If you live in an area with ants, you know how hard it is to get rid of them once one has created a trail in for the rest of them to follow.

Check the top of your vent and make sure it is securely in place. If it's off, even a little bit, that small space is ample room for pests to get inside your home.

The next thing to take a closer look at is the screening around the vent. Many rodents love to make their way through screens to see what's on the other side. If this is the case with your dryer vent screen, those rodents may have made themselves an express route into your home. Even if they decided they don't want to use the access, they have made a nice big hole for other rodents or bugs to use to get into your home. You should regularly inspect your vent screen to make sure there are no such holes or even small tears where pests may enter your home.

If you know all about cleaning your dryer from the inside, cleaning the lint trap, etc, you should also add checking on the dryer vent to your checklist so you can make sure that while cleaning things out you are not letting things in.

Former Fed-Ex Contractor, Steve Gors, Turns Dryer Vent Wizard Entrepreneur; Customers Appreciate his Concern for their Safety

Steve provides dryer vent cleaning services and educates his customers on fire safety and dryer vent maintenance

Murrieta, CA -. Steve Gors, former Fed-Ex contractor, traded his delivery van for a logo-ed uniform to own and operate a Dryer Vent Wizard, Safe Homes, Dry Clothes (DVW) franchise in Riverside County.

DVW services prevent dryer fires, keep dryers functioning properly and provide energy savings through dryer and dryer vent maintenance, cleaning, repair, replacement and alterations.

When Gors decided he didn't want back into the grocery business and wasn't ready to retire, he looked into franchising. Having 30 years of business related skills behind him gave him a wealth of experience on which to draw. He researched several concepts and found Dryer Vent Wizard Dry Clothes, Safe Homes. Despite the funny name, Gors found the concept intriguing.

"I liked that DVW provided much needed solutions to consumers' dryer and dryer vent problems which ultimately prevents dryer fires," says Gors.

According to Gors, consumer response to DVW has been positive, although a big part of what he does is educating. "When consumers find their dryer taking more than one cycle to dry a load, they assume it's mechanical when the real problem is lint accumulation in the dryer vent, causing the dryer to work inefficiently and become susceptible to a dryer fire," says Gors.

In an effort to make consumers more aware, entrepreneur Gors shares these maintenance "tips" to prevent dryer fires and keep dryers running efficiently. He urges consumers to be sure their dryer vent systems are up to code with the city, state and manufacturer, to replace any plastic or foil vents with semi-rigid or solid metal venting material, to keep lint trays clean and free of lint between loads, wash lint screens every few months to remove residue build-up from fabric softeners, and to have the dryer vent system professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year. Steve also makes sure all his customers know not to leave the house or go to sleep with the dryer running.

Steve tells his customers to watch for certain warning signs of potential fire hazards, like clothes taking more than one cycle to dry, no visible lint on the screen between loads, dryer repeatedly stopping during a cycle and clothes having a moldy smell after drying.

DVW is more than a dryer vent cleaning service; they also show concern for consumer safety, educating customers about dryer vent maintenance and fire prevention

Murrieta, CA - Greg Longe, co-president of Dryer Vent Wizard (DVW), Dry Clothes, Safe Homes, announced the awarding of a DVW franchise in California. Local resident and former Fed-Ex contractor Steve Gors services Western Riverside County & North San Diego County.

Dryer Vent Wizard, Dry Clothes, Safe Homes is a national franchise company specializing in dryer fire prevention and "urgent response" dryer and dryer vent maintenance, repair, replacement and alterations. "I make sure all my customers understand the importance of dryer vent maintenance before my job is complete," said Steve Gors.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration "failure to clean" was cited as the leading factor contributing to clothes dryer fires in residential buildings. Similar reports by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, (CPSC), confirm annual maintenance of dryers and dryer vents as a home safety issue lacking consumer awareness. Dryer Vent Wizard, Dry Clothes, Safe Homes provides "urgent response" solutions to the problem of dryers functioning inefficiently or not at all.

Founded in 2004 by David Lavalle in Boston, Massachusetts the company has awarded 50 franchises in major metro markets since franchising began in March 2005. Other DVW California franchise locations besides Riverside include San Diego, Ventura County, Fresno & Sacramento.

DVW of Murrieta provides services to consumers and businesses in San Diego County, California, Encinitas, Escondido, Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos, Fallbrook, Bonsall, Oceanside, Rainbow, Solana Beach, Del Mar, Riverside County, Temecula, Murrieta, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Perris, Corona, Riverside, Moreno Valley, Hemet, Menifee, Canyon Lake, Nuevo, San Jacinto, Winchester, Rubidoux, Norco and neighboring communities.

Advice from Steve about your Dryer Vent Ducts: Are they Aluminum or Vinyl?

08-27-08
Steve Gors

What do you really know about the ductwork attached to your clothes dryer? If you're answer is 'not much', what you don't know could hurt you and be a fire hazard in your home.

The ductwork is the piping that runs from the back of your dryer to whatever style of dryer vent you have outside your home. The whole job of the aluminum duct system is to remove the hot air from the dyer (along with any lint or dust it has removed from your clothes) and send it outside your house.

Heat Removal

Can you imagine how hard your air conditioning would have to work to counter the effect of all the hot air from your dryer coming into your home? Even a massive home air conditioning unit likely couldn't compete with all that heat. But thankfully, you have something that will keep some of that hot air from blowing all over your house - your dryer vent. The dryer vent takes the hot air from your dryer to the outside of your home through the vent system.

Lint Removal

The goal of the dryer vent system is to get lint and dust out of your home as well. While you may like to think that the lint trap on your dryer is a great piece of equipment that magically grabs every piece of lint that is coming out of your dryer, that is not the case. There is plenty of lint that gets past the lint trap and goes into the ductwork. The hot air being released from your dryer will often blow this lint out of the line instead of blowing it around your house.

What Kind of Dryer Vent Do You Have?

Now that you know what the dryer vent should do, you also need to know what kind you have. Many older homes were created using older, vinyl ducts. While this used to be the way it was made, years of experience have shown it is a dangerous choice. If your dryer were to throw a spark, it is very possible that the vinyl duct could ignite and be the cause of a dryer vent fire.

You need to make sure you have a dryer vent system made of aluminum. Aluminum will not ignite if there should be a few sparks. Find out what type of dryer vent you have in your home and if it is not aluminum, or if you are in doubt, call a professional for an inspection and evaluation of your dryer vent system.
