A Lewistown Run

A weekend of viewing wildlife, hiking and a little fly casting in central Montana.

Rambled out of the flathead, cruising down hwy. 83 in the Swan Valley. It's around two in the afternoon, a beautiful clear sky. At Condon the group was hungry, was decided to stop at the Condon Store for some sandwiches from there deli and few snacks. Once re-fueled down thru Seeley at Clearwater Junction headed up through the Blackfoot Valley over Rogers pass out upon the Great Plains.

Once on the plains, took a right on hwy 434 to Wolf Creek. Took a turn on recreation rd along the Missouri River below Holter Dam. The "MO" was running high & off color, along with plenty of drift boats all about. For the technical fisherman a great place to test your skills. This a beautiful drives with lots of wildlife along the way. The old Steel Bridge was in the movie The Untouchables. More on the stream down river another time.

We entered I-15 passed through Great Falls, then east to central Montana. The casting crew was hungry again at Belt. We dropped down the Belt Creek and Belt. Stopped the Harvest Moon bar for some local brew and brat. I personally like the Pigs Ass Porter, the rest of the group when for Beltian White with a slice of orange.

We arrived in Lewistown, around 10:30 pm and settled in for the night.

Out of bed before the rest, and headed downtown for a great discovery. While looking for wifi I found the Rising Trout Café. This place has the incredible baked goods. Leaf the owner also roast small batches of coffee which is awesome. The Rising Trout is also a book store. Leaf is also an artist and sells her paintings here along with notes cards of her paintings. The Rising Trout Café if worth going out of the way for.

Upon leaving the Rising Trout, found the rest of the gang & headed into the Little Belts for some hiking, fishing, along with mingling with the wildlife. We stopped by the Judith and the original forest service cabin.

The Judith was really muddy, so deeper into the mountains. We went, for more fun. We connected with a golden eagle which interacted with us. Out on Russian flats saw a few head of elk, and caught several fish in the creek.

In the morning we fish a local creek east of town on some private land. Caught a couple of rainbows, packed up and headed back into the sunset to home.

Well off to a riffle / till next drift
