I had a vacant home listed several years back now, and this home was located in the middle of a 5 acre tract of land that surrounded it, also for sale. This was a very much older home in great need of TLC, the owners had left the power and water on, and it did have a few very old furnishings in it. I had just met an appraiser that morning at the home, we locked it up and left. I went back later with an agent out of my office to show her the listing, only to find that there was a homeless person living in the back bedroom, needless to say that when we walked in the house, he ran out the back! He had been storing his belongings in the closet of the bedroom. I was so glad that I had not had a buyer with me, and that I did not come alone! I told the homeowner that they needed to secure the property if we were going to keep it on the market for the safety of the agents and their clients. That was pretty scary, makes me laugh now, but it sure wasn't funny at the time...
Even to this day, when I show vacant homes, I always remember that experience, and how glad I was that the person living in the home ran out the back....
Yes, you read it correctly... You are a REALTOR, probably a parent or a grandparent, a spouse or significant other, a sibling, and the list goes on. You are probably involved, on top of your family activities and events, in community activities and events, office activities and events, and the list goes on and on. But what are you doing for YOU? Most likely we are attracted to our industry by our love of serving and helping others, and too often, in our passion for taking care of everyone around us, we forget to take care of ourselves. Find something that you can do just for you, maybe it's a massage, maybe going on a run, or a bike ride, a yoga class, an evening reading a book with a glass of wine, a pedicure, or maybe just something that you find yourself saying...."I would really like to .....(fill in the blank), if I just had the time". Well, you make the time to take care of everyone else, make the time to take care of you. Just make sure that whatever you decide to do in that endeavor, it's all about YOU!
Run your business, so it doesn't run you!
All too often, and how many times do you hear a fellow agent complaining about some prospective client that's running them all over the earth looking for that perfect home. All the while they are spending countless hours, nights and weekends and racking up the miles on their vehicle, HOPING to sell them a home, and all they can think about is, "get us to the closing table so that I be done with these folks!". Might I add, that in this scenerio, there are no new clients in the pipeline, because they have given all of their focus and energy to these "prospective buyers". When we see ourselves as professionals, such as how attorneys, doctors, dentists, accountants, etc., see themselves, and educate our clients of how WE work, in respect to the hours that we work, taking full advantage of ALL that technology offers, let them run around checking out the possibilites prior to us setting up appointments, and the most important, let them get back with you on their "5 favs", set appointments for those 5 properties, go and sell! Truly, most clients really don't want to get dragged all around either.
Quality clients will respect you as a professional when you respect yourself as a professional. Have you ever heard the phrase, "desperate people do desperate things", well, right now there are alot of desperate real estate agents out there, don't be one of them... Besides, if we are honest, haven't we all been here....
Everyone needs rest and relaxation, but you also need to have FUN and Laugh! Whether it's a night out dancing, bowling, joining a softball league, golfing, a tennis match, a funny movie at the theatre, a game board night with friends, like pictionary, everyone is so busy working and keeping up with the home, kids, laundry, shopping, bills, cleaning, yardwork, even working out, and well, the list just goes on and on.... for your all around health, don't forget to pencil in some FUN TIME, you'll be glad that you did! Laughter is medicine for the soul!
I have become aware of some very wonderful opportunities recently, and I just wanted to share them with you... Have you ever wanted to have a housekeeper, or a gardener or a lawn care service, or maybe even pool care service, window washing, painting your home, inside or out, or maybe even remodel to your home, but all of the quotes that you received were more than you wanted to pay? In this time of economic distress for many, there are alot of folks out there that are looking for work, and they are hard working and very talented people that have maybe lost their jobs, and just need to support their families. Ask around for referrals from people that you know, you may be very surprised to find that there is a large group of people just looking for work. You may be surprised at their quote, and you will not only be saving yourself the time of doing it yourself, but you will be helping a family in need!
