Today is Good Neighbor Day and a great excuse to take a few minutes to thank your neighbor for all the help they may have given you over the year!
Good Neighbor Day was started by Mrs. Becky Mattson in Montana with Congressional correspondence to The Honorable Mike Mansfield in 1971. With Mr. Mansfield's enthusiastic support, National Good Neighbor Day was subsequently proclaimed by three United States Presidents: President Carter in 1978, President Ford in 1976 and President Nixon 1973. In addition, governors of many states also issued proclamations of Good Neighbor Day.
I am fortunate to have two tremendous neighbors that watch over our family whether we are at the house or not! They have been strong supporters of our neighborhood meetings (one of my great neighbors is pictured to the left, Karen, with a deputy at our last neighborhood meeting), they check our house when we are gone, take my daughter to school when I am sick, bring over dinners during tough times and they have even made repairs to things that broke while we were out of town.
Our neighbors are members of I-Neighbors, a free program that utilizes the Internet to help neighborhood residents communicate, share information and become involved in their communities. It's a great way for all of us to stay in touch and informed about who and what is going on!
Now I am off to bake some goodies to take to my neighbors to thank them for all they have done for me!

Tucson's freeway widening project is moving along - here are some updates from the Arizona Department of Transporation regarding openings, closures and changes in speed limits.
New Traffic Configuration for Interstate 10: Prince Road to 29th Street
TUCSON - The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has implemented new speed limit and traffic signs and has a new lane configuration following the opening of the newly constructed section on Interstate 10 between Prince Road and 29th Street. Originally scheduled to open in 2010, the project is now scheduled for substantial completion by the end of September 2009. All east- and westbound entrance and exit ramps, and all lanes of I-10 between Prince Road and 29th Street will be open. The traveling public will be readjusting to new traffic patterns and will be cited by law enforcement if safety guidelines are not followed.
Traffic Patterns and Conditions After Complete Ramp and I-10 Opening
On I-10, motorists have access to four lanes in each direction with an auxiliary lane between ramps and 16 new bridges/underpasses for seven cross streets: Grant Road, Speedway Boulevard, St. Mary's Road, Congress Street, Granada Avenue/Cushing Street, 18th Street and 22nd Street. The speed limit on I-10 in this area is 65 mph.
On the frontage roads, motorists have access to two lanes in each direction with yield signs at the points where exit-ramp traffic enters the frontage roads. The speed limit on the frontage roads is 45 mph.
Law Enforcement - Motorists who do not abide by the speed limit and yield signs will be cited by the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) on the interstate and by the Tucson Police Department (TPD) on the frontage roads.
Transitioning to New Traffic Patterns - The public should expect a transition period while motorists adjust to new traffic patterns. Please exercise patience, caution, courtesy and safety.
Final Construction Work and Completion - The landscaping and final construction work remaining after the full opening of I-10 is anticipated to be completed by the end of November. Until then, the public will continue to be informed of temporary ramp closures and traffic impacts through weekly traffic alerts, updates and the project Web site.
Interim Traffic Operations Center (ITOC) - The ITOC will continue to be in operation under ADOT direction.
To Stay Informed - The public may continue to check on current traffic impacts online or by phone. For online updates, go to www.i10tucson.com or twitter.com/I10tucson. The I-10 Hotline number is (520) 327-6444 or toll-free (877) 961-1010.

The Annual Saguaro National Park Labor Day Run in Tucson, sponsored by the Southern Arizona Roadrunners, celebrates 40 years this coming Monday, September 7th. Typically, this event kicks off running season here in Tucson. The main event is an 8.5 mile loop through beautiful Saguaro National Park, along with a 2-mile Family Fun Run/Walk.
I've done this event for several years. Being a last minute "walk up" type, because though excited, I am always on the ropes about doing this run because it's tough!
The sudden race elevation (this photo was emailed to me by a friend who took a photo of his t-shirt and allowed me to use it for this post!) that hits ya at about 3.5 miles into the event - right after a very nice easy downhill start - makes the final 4.5 miles very "laboring" to the finish.
But looking at the positive side- you are not alone; you are running around some of the most magnificent scenery Tucson has to offer; you might be able to catch a glimpse of some desert wildlife; and the pre- and post- event snacks and entertainment are always great! To boost you along, the local high school track teams are out there along the route with lots of water and encouragement to distract you while you pound the pavement!
Best of all, JUST DOING IT! Whether you participate in the 8 mile or the 2 mile Fun Run/Walk and no matter if you race it, run it, jog it or walk/jog it - you are out there and doing something that's not only good exercise, but sets you up for a guilt-free day of enjoying a backyard BBQ filled with yummy eats!
Enjoy your Labor Day weekend!
