Shorts Yesterday - Snow Today: One Of The Treats of Tucson Living

As the clouds started to break away a little here on this rainy, overcast Tucson morning - these are images of snow powdering the Catalina Mountains (aka Mt. Lemmon)!

These photos are my backyard view taken from a point and shoot (so not the best quality - working on a new camera - any ideas??!) - but you get the "picture"!

Shorts to Snow pants overnight- off we go to the Mt. Lemmon cabin for some sledding fun!

Upated at 7:10pm - Ski Slopes may open on Mt. Lemmon!

Take A Hike - A Short One - On Tucson's Northeast Side!

The weather in Tucson is perfect right now to be outside enjoying everything the desert has to offer --

  • gorgeous sunrises and sunsets
  • trees, cactus and native plants getting ready to bloom after the winter freeze
  • melting snow from Mount Lemmon that brings in natural water flows throughout many hiking areas
  • little bunnies, lizards and other desert creatures venturing out climbing on bushes or often, sunbathing on rocks
  • and the best part of this time of year here in Tucson? If you are lucky - you'll have several chances to see deer - crossing the roads or bouncing through some of Tucson's far northeast side neighborhoods off Soldier Trail toward Reddington Pass.

If you only have a little time - here is my pick for a great "short but sweet" trail hike where you'll experience the above - and if you are lucky - you'll see the deer! (We were lucky enough last week to see a family of deer on this hike!)

From Soldier Trail and Ft. Lowell - head east until you see a sign that reads, "Trailhead" with an arrow pointing north (yes, simple but effective!)! Follow the arrow until you reach the end of the road! It will take you right to a small circular parking lot that is the start of the trail hike!

Here are some highlights about this hike:

It's an easy uphill trail - you can go 4 miles or 6 - one way.

There is a horse-path so be cautious of the adventurous ones going up on down on the ponies!

Most of the path is graded - with wooden steps in certain areas.

It's perfect for introducing children to hiking - I've done this hike with my daughter since she was 5 and she's always loved it!

There is only one path up and down - though skinny - it's easy enough to move aside for the occasional runner or hiker going up and down.

Many Tucson Boy Scout Clubs take this hike and at the very top of the hill, enjoy lunch.

Then there is the ambitious, very fit, occasional person who runs this uphill trail! Just say some encouraging words as they pass you by!

The views of the Rincons, when you reach the top, are extraordinary. Face west at Sunrise - and it's a breathtaking sight of the entire city - including the top of Mount Lemmon.

Along the way, there are several saguaro cactus that have naturally fallen - many have broken open - if you venture off the path (just a little though!) - you'll be able to get a close up view of saguaro cactus ribs and the natural holes in the plant from birds who've made nests inside the cactus. Often, the nests are still inside!

If you are with someone who knows what direction to look - you'll be lucky enough to get an overview glimpse of the famous Paul and Linda McCartney ranch! And for the curious, there is a Circle K on Tanque Verde Road and Conestoga - the northeast side rumor is that Mr. McCartney himself, when in town, has been known to stop there, driving his old, old jeep to pick up some bottled water and gas on his way back to the ranch!

So go take a hike - this short one - and check back to let me know what you experienced!

Just Over 100 Days Of School! One Local Tucson Arizona School Celebrates!

The beginning of February marks the "just over 100 days of school" for children across the country! Here in Tucson, there are many wonderful pubic, private and charter schools. For many parents, it's a tough decision to decide which school is the best for their children. Having worked and volunteered in several public and private schools throughout Tucson, I can say that the best school for a child is where they are happy!

My daughter has attended Hermosa Montesorri School located on the northeast side of Tucson, Arizona (off Soldier Trail and Ft. Lowell Road) since preschool. She has been happy there and so far - after "just over 100 days of school" - I have been satisfied!

Here is some info about Hermosa Montessori School from a parent perspective:

It's one of the top excelling schools here in Tucson.

It's part charter and part private.

It offers classes from preschool through the 8th grade.

The teaching style is unique - I must admit - it is a concept I've had a hard time getting used to -but the bottom line is - my daughter is learning and progressing and that's what matters!

There is a lot of freedom for the children with school work and making choices.

The classrooms are open, lots of natural light and views of the desert campus; lots of colorful artwork and stimulating activities to encourage learning.

The variety for teaching that is "not in a textbook" is a nice and keeps children engaged.

Although the school might not be a fit for all children - it is for many and the teachers have a huge desire to work with all the kids in hopes of seeing them succeed.

The basic foundation of the school, from my perspective, is to teach children to be independent, make decisions and learn several ways of accomplishing things instead of just one.

Hermosa Montessori School was recently featured in the Arizona Daily Star for an earth-friendly, back to nature learning project-- one of the many unique activities offered by the school.

I sat in a line that was a mile long, from 3am until 5:00pm to enroll my daughter - that's how many parents are interested in this school!

Yesterday, a little late, because the children needed to finish their work before play -- the school hosted the annual Chinese New Year parade.

After two months of crafting masks - here are some of the highlights:
