It is known for its southwestern artsy heritage and for its world class ski area - Taos Ski Valley located just 15-miles or so to the northeast. Taos is at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, with an estimated in-town population of about 5,000, and an estimated county wide population of about 35,000 to 40,000. Taos enjoys a moderate climate, with average summer highs in the mid-80's and average winter lows around 10-degrees. The warmest month is typically July - the coldest is typically January. Annual precipitation is about 12-inches, with the wettest month typically being August.
