The Federal Housing Administration, which provides mortgage insurance and loans made by FHA-approved 
lenders, will allow its lenders to let first-time homebuyers use the recently enacted $8,000 tax credit as a down payment. Previously, most buyers would not receive the funds until after they filed their tax return.

In Northern Virginia, including Loudoun and Prince William counties, for the week ending Thursday, May 7, 2009, the total inventory of foreclosures and bank-owned properties dropped another 16% compared to the previous week - from 269 to 227. This was the 18th consecutive week showing a decrease in the inventory of these types of properties.
In addition, the total inventory of fixer-uppers dropped another 3% - from 182 to 177, also the 18th consecutive week showing a decrease in the inventory of these properties.
In the last 30 days, the number of available foreclosures has dropped 43%, and the number of available fixer-uppers has dropped 25%.

Once every three years, the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances, conducts a survey and provides a snapshots of family income and net worth. From that data, the National Association of Realtors® estimated the impact for renter and homeowner households through the calendar year 2008. The result, shown below, suggests that despite declines in equity and housing markets, homeowners still have a net worth greater than renters in 2008. Homeownership builds wealth in two ways by paying down a mortgage and through appreciation; the rise in the home's value over time.
