Anyone out there invest in real estate in the past 3-5 years? I find myself among the multitudes of fellow real estate professionals who have happily invested in real estate in the past and would now happily get out of many of those investments if they could. Ok, I probably could if I was willing to take a substantial financial hit. I actually currently have a spec home I own in Central Oregon that is listed for thousands less than I have in it. Ouch! And even at that I haven’t been able to sell it.
But here’s the thing. I have also made thousands on other investments. Here’s how I look at the big picture. Hopefully this take on things will help soften the hit many of you have or are about to take. The words “big picture” are key. Investing is a risk. When you invest with your financial adviser the recommendation is always to spread the risk among several products. You know: diversification. We have to look at our real estate investments the same way. We have made money on real estate investments in the past and now, not so much. But we have made money in the past.
So sit down and do the math and you will probably (hopefully) find that when you subtract any current loss you are about to take from past profits, most of us are still ahead of the game. And who couldn’t use a good tax right off from investment losses?
Does this line of thought make sense or am I deluding myself? The truth of the matter is it’s all about how you look at the big picture and overall gain or loss. A positive attitude and spin on life goes a long way. And when you can’t change the facts, what else is there to do but stay positive and move forward.
It is what is, so stay positive and keep moving forward. It will get better!
