Fairfield Warde High School - New Football Coach

New Coach on board....from the CT Post....

Warde football's next coach: Duncan DellaVolpe

WARDE.jpgFairfield Warde will announce Ansonia native and New Canaan assistant Duncan DellaVolpe as its next head coach Thursday during a meeting with sudents.

DellaVolpe was a standout at -- where else? -- Ansonia in the late 1980s and was a captain on the 1990 squad along with John Picheco, Dennis Tinney and Kevin Sharkey.

He's spent the last 10 years as an assistant coach under Lou Marinelli at New Canaan. As the team's offensive coordinator, he was was a big part of the team's recent switch to a spread offense and developed three different quarterbacks into state champions -- Curtis Casali, Charlie Westfal and Nate Quinn.

DellaVolpe, who was rumored to be a top candidate for the job back in the winter, takes over a club that had made modest strides under former coach Tony Catapano. The Mustangs went from a one-win team in 2005, to three wins in 2007 and 2008.

Fairfield Tax Rate Referendum Update

I am trying to get my arms around the mechanics of the impact of a $2.1 Million cut....and there are a host of assumptions at work....let me try to lay out the ones I see....and I would ask for anyone's help with factual support for how this might play out...

If the State Legislature renews the MBR (Min Budget Requirement).... We need some input on the likelihood of this and possible amendments.... and the Referendum is passed....(not sure how much support it has but for discussion sake let's play this out)

We must cut $2.1 Million Ed Budget... Then here is what I understand will most likely follow....

Then the BOF would meet and lower our mill rate (I assume - does the BOF have to make a Mill Rate Adjustment? Could the Town just keep the Revenue overage?)

Then in FY 2010 ( I assume) we get a note from the State telling us to replenish the $2.1 Million or face penalties... So we have to come up with $2.1 Million and give it to the BOE...

Now what have we accomplished other than now putting the Town in worse financial shape?

The 2.1 Million comes from Townside cuts or by taking it out of our already thin Surplus

And based on the drop in our Surplus combined with the Referendum that passed, the Rating Agencies take a long hard look at our Rating.

So we could end up with less Surplus, a lower Rating and no change in the BOE Budget...

This is going to be quite the Educational Experience....

Stay tuned for more updates...all the best, Mike

Fairfield Tax Rate Challenge

A Referendum Petition is being prepared.

It is asking for a $2.1 Million cut to the BOE Budget.

This is not a wise move. As we learned this week during the RTM discussions, the State has guidelines that penalize Towns that don't maintain BOE funding to certain levels.

With the budget we just passed, we are in violation and will have to increase BOE funding by $48,000 or face a 2 to 1 dollar penalty in reduction of future State funding. So as of right now, the Town must take $48,000 out of contingency and move it over to the BOE budget line.

If the Referendum passes, beside the detrimental effect on our school system, it would have a major impact on the finances of our entire Town making us lose 2. to 1 or $4.2 Million in State funding....I am not quite sure of the mechanics and will have to get more information for you on that one.

This would be a disaster of major proportions... It is really important to the Town's financial well being that no additional cuts are made to the BOE budget - it will cost us more than we cut in quality education and in dollars.

I will pass on more updates as they are available...thanks for listening, Mike

The Mill Rate is multiplied by your homes Assessed Value to determine your Annual Tax bill.

The Lion and the Gazelle

A Story from the "Coach":

Every morning in Africa,

a Gazelle wakes up.

It knows it must run faster than the

fastest Lion or it will be killed.

Every morning a Lion wakes up.

It knows it must outrun the slowest

Gazelle or it will starve to death.

It doesn't matter whether you're

a Lion or a Gazelle,

when the sun comes up,

you had better be running!

We were trying to find a way to describe how much we hustle for our clients. This story seemed to capture the energy and enthusiasm that we strive to achieve. So whether you're Buying or Selling, when the sun comes up you want the Tetreau Team working for you!

Have a Great Day,

Mike and Fern
