Crist takes health insurance message to two Realtor associations

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - March 6, 2009 - Gov. Crist hit the road today to talk about Cover Florida, the new affordable health care insurance program approved by the 2008 Legislature. Crist has three planned stops today, which include the Daytona Beach Area and Greater Tampa Association of Realtors.

"Lack of health insurance is the number-one barrier to accessing health care, and Cover
Florida can help Floridians remove that barrier," Crist says. "Even if you have a pre-existing health condition, you won't be turned away."

Florida applicants age 19 to 64 without health insurance for at least six months or recently unemployed qualify for Cover Florida health plans. Floridians may also be eligible if, during the previous six months, they have lost employer-sponsored health benefits or are no longer covered by a public health insurance program.

Six health insurance providers have been authorized to offer Cover Florida Health Care plans. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida and United Healthcare are available in all 67 Florida counties with additional carriers in selected counties. The six companies have designed 25 products, and each insurer offers at least two benefit options - one with catastrophic and hospital coverage and one focusing on preventive care.

For more information on coverage, visit the Cover Florida Web site at: www.coverfloridahealthcare.com

Panama City: New apartment complex targets workforce housing

New apartment complex targets workforce housing

February 25, 2009

SPRINGFIELD - A new 216-unit apartment community tailored for workforce housing has opened in on 15th Street.

Waterstone at Springfield first started accepting residents in November and celebrated its grand opening Feb. 14, property manager Debra Matthews said.

Matthews said the new community, with one-, two- and three-bedroom units, had filled an affordable housing need in the area, particularly for Tyndall Air Force Base personnel.

She estimated Waterstone's initial move-ins included about 80 percent military personnel, as well as Bay Medical Center employees, school teachers, correctional workers and other middle-income professionals.

"I think that the idea was to build affordable housing for people who weren't quite ready to purchase a home," Matthews said of Waterstone.

Workers broke ground on the apartment community in February 2008.

Area business, banking and affordable-housing officials attended the groundbreaking and hailed Waterstone as the type of workforce housing needed to attract and house new hires.

Omaha, Neb.-based Tapestry Group, a private, tax-exempt not-for-profit foundation, was the developer for the project.

As a foundation and a not-for-profit group, Tapestry can obtain low interest rates on money it borrowed, allowing it to pass on savings to renters, according to a February 2008 News Herald story.

Jacksonville-based Column Guaranteed LLC was involved in financing the project.

Tapestry also is the developer for the Waterstone at Jenks Avenue apartments, which broke ground in September 2008.

Matthews said prospective tenants at Waterstone's Springfield complex cannot make more than 120 percent of the area's median income.

The gated community's amenities include a resort-style pool, business center and fitness center.

Since it started moving residents in, Waterstone's goal has been to attract 20 new residents a month, Matthews said.

She said even with the current economic conditions, the apartment community had managed to meet that goal or surpass it each month, with 40 new leases signed in January.

"We're pretty much on track," Matthews said.
