Westgate Market, which opened its doors in 1952, will close by the end of March. The buyer is Kelvin Scribner, president of Sagetech Corporation. The decision to sell was not unexpected by the partners, who said the land and building have been on the market for several years.The store had seven employees, Many of them have worked at Westgate for a number of years. The store had its beginning in 1952, when it started inside Westgate Bowling Alley. That facility, which burned down in the early 1980s, was located immediately north of the store's current location.
"It's been a struggle the last few years, So I'm kind of looking forward to being relieved of that,"
"It's been kind of a bittersweet thing. I'm going to miss that the relationship we have with our customers. It's a loss for the community, too.In 1989, there were seven independent stores and we had two of them. Hilltop left a big hole up there when it closed, but I think Westgate is going to have a greater impact on The Dalles. "We were the last two independent markets operating in this community. It's the end of an era."
This is very exciting news! a loss for the 7 employees but an opening for up to 100 new jobs!
