How To Spot Twitter Spam, And What To Do About It

If you spend any time on twitter you've probably noticed that there's a lot of twitter spam these days. If you haven't noticed - Wake Up! It's there! I wanted to share a few things that I look for in order to determine whether or not a twitter user may be a spammer.

Last week, I wrote a post entitled "You're Only As Good As Your Last Tweet" which highlighted some changes that have been made to the twitter user interface to make it easier to know more about twitter users at a glance.

Now when glancing, here's a few things to look out for. The first thing I look at is the users name. If the user is a spammer, there's usually some dead giveaways...like letters grouped together to make psudo-words, orr names that are too weird to be names, or names followed by a series of numbers. As if the creator of the account was making multiple versions of the same account.

The other thing to look for is contradictions between the Account Name (the one in large blue type at the top) and the user name (the one immediately below the account name and right before the location). Please see the SPAM #3 example below, where I highlighted all of the Account Names and User Names for you to compare. For instance if my name is Jason Sanders, but my Account Name says Sandra_McHotty...you can bet I'm a spammer. Once you start paying attention to the names, you will start to notice the same user names over and over and over. If you've never thought to look for this, scan your follower list and you just might find a lot of Johngoogle's and ToomerJean's and Jamessunny's and MansonCharles's and I'm sure there are tons of others. You'll also notice that these spammers often use the same Avatar Pictures for their Spammy accounts.

Twitter Spam

Another giveaway is the content that the twitter user is posting. Spammers often use technology to update their spam to their multiple twitter accounts simultaneously. As I showed in my article last week, you can now see every twitter user's last tweet. If you're seeing the same tweet over and over, it's a spam account, as seen in the SPAM #1 and SPAM #2 examples in the photo above. Some Twitter spammers are a bit more advanced and try to use tweet scheduling services to doll out their spam, but a trained eye can also pick up on those patterns. Notice in the picture above the repetitive occurrence of people tweeting about yoga. Often a spammer will pay attention to trending topics and try to hide their spam links in a message about a popular topic, i.e: Michael Jackson, or Iran Election.

Someone will inevitably ask, "Is it wrong for someone to have multiple twitter accounts. If they're using them all is it really spam. The answer is yes, it can be. The rules are hard to define in a clear cut way, and Twitter obviously goes out of it's way to use common sense when evaluating these issues, but here is their take on the topic.

So if you spot a spammer on Twitter what are you to do? Twitter encourages all it's user to report spam. You do that by addressing your tweet to @Spam followed by the user name of the @OffendingParty. You can also include in your message what the @OffendingParty was doing to constitute spam (name squatting, unsolicited Direct Message marketing, etc).

I'm normally not one who looks for opportunities to throw people under the bus, but recently I've started reporting every instance of spam that I see. It has become so prevalent that it's important for people who value and care about the Twitter platform to be vigilant in keeping it free from this obnoxious behavior...so don't be afraid to report spam.

A word of warning, never RT (ReTweet) a message to @Spam, you may accidentally get the legitimate user who originally reported the spam or even your own account suspended along with the spam.

Cowardly Blogging 101 - The Complete Guide To Comment Sniping For Dummies (Literally)

Not SmartThey say blogging is a skill, and that anyone who is determined, persistent, and takes the time to hone his writing skills and learn what moves his audience can be a good blogger. Of course those that say that are already great bloggers, who appear to do it completely naturally and effortlessly. Sure, it's easy for them...they're smart. What are you supposed to do if you don't have an original thought in your head or the patience to develop one?

Who's The Coward? ME!Never fear! There is hope! You can always be a cowardly blogger! Cowardly blogging is a skill in it's own right, but you'll probably find it easier to master because there's no creativity involved, and it takes much less time to make a name for yourself. You just have to master a few key concepts. Before you know it you'll be able to capitalize on the popularity, intelligence, and creative writing of those other bloggers whom you hate so much. Think of all the attention you'll get without doing all the work!

Lazy, Pathetic, but FunnyI could write a whole book about cowardly blogging, but I'll save most of that information for other blog posts, or perhaps a future book. For now, let me just lay down a few basic points. A cowardly blogger shys away from expressing any opinions in his blog. It's better to be totally politically correct than risk angering or alienating someone who might read your blog. Usually cowardly bloggers just stick to market reports, or reporting the news. Sure, by the time most people read a cowardly blog, they've already got that same information from watching the news on T.V. or Bloomberg or Yahoo, but hey...it's safe!

Sorry, We're LAZYI'm not saying cowardly bloggers are boring people....oh no...far from it. But there is a time and a place. You don't have to always hide from controversy. On the contrary, you need to embrace it! The problem with controversial blogging is (it's not cowardly) that a blog is a tool that's attached you your name and your professional reputation. If you were to be controversial on your blog, you might actually make people think...and some of those people may think that they don't like you very much. Besides, being controversial for an entire blog post requires a lot of work and creativity....better just stick with being cowardly. It's much better to be controversial in your comments on OTHER people's blogs. Controversial comments can be nice and short. You can totally disrupt the point of the blog with your mindless controversial drivel, and most times you can get away without having to present any proof to back up your moronic comments. Usually blog comment sections aren't indexed for Google so you don't have to worry about an internet search revealing what a numb skull you are. You can even comment anonymously! How fun! Which brings us to....

Comment Sniping, How To

LAZY - Just cause you have to, doesn't mean you need to.Selecting Your Topic: The first thing you have to do is figure out a controversial topic that you want to comment on. Yes, it has to be controversial! You want your voice to stand out in the conversation. Don't be afraid to be inappropriate and push people's buttons. Remember what's at stake: If you can get their attention, you will be able to attract them back to your dull mindless blog where they can make an accurate assessment of your intelligence...or lack thereof. Selecting the right topic is the first step in your goal to steal the audience of the blog you're commenting on. Although there are lots of controversial topics to choose from, a good idea might be to make controversial comments about someone who's dead...ideally recently...preferably a celebrity. Lot's of people will read a blog post about a recently departed celebrity. Make sure you get your comments in early! Think about it, dead people can't defend themselves, and the last thing you want is the celebrity to show up and take away your hard stolen earned attention.

Once you've figured out your topic, you now have to be very careful with your content. The slightest mistake and the whole thing could blow up in your face. It's a delicate balance...being inappropriate, but not outright hate-able. I know you're not one for ideas, so I'll throw you a bone. You could accuse Christopher Reeves of being an arrogant a**hole because he only raised millions of dollars for research into spinal chord injuries AFTER he himself became a quadriplegic. You could make wise-cracks about Michael Jackson and little kids on blogs that are focusing on the loss of a great entertainer. (It'll look like you're taking the moral high road....Little do they know, HA!) You could point out that it's ironic that Dom DeLuise likely died from the same fatty foods that he so famously cooked on TV. On blogs commemorating the work of David Carradine, you could make rude comments regarding how his body was found. The awful possibilities are endless!

I LIKE MY MINIONS SPINELESSSelecting Your Victim: You've got your orders. Your mission is clear. Now you just have to define your enemy. Let's face it, some people probably won't like what you're going to write, least of all the blogger who wrote the post you're commenting on. There are a couple key factors to consider when choosing your commenting victim. Ideally the person should be popular. After all, if you're going to spend 5 minutes coming up with a controversial comment...you want all that hard work to pay off and as many people as possible to read what you have to say. You crave attention, right? RIGHT! The more popular your victim, the more attention you'll get.

Easy TargetSecondly, you want to try and choose a timid blogger. Perhaps someone who is new, or someone who is stupid, or ideally all three. You'll get the most mileage out of all your hard work if your victim decides not to call you out on your comments. A cowardly blogger never wants that, because a cowardly blogger never takes the time to research support for his ideas, er other people's ideas, er controversies....eh whatever (you know what I mean). Find the right new, timid, stupid blogger to comment on and they'll let you spew your controversies all over their comment stream. It's hard, but not impossible, to find someone who won't realize what you're full of, or know what to do with you.

Triage: You've done the research and all the hard work, and 5 minutes after you started you've hit the mother-load. You've found a totally new blogger who's incredibly popular and creative, and timid and stupid who's just unlucky enough to have written about a recently deceased celebrity. You have your crass inappropriate comment all composed. Go ahead! Hit the submit button!

YOU GOT OWNEDUh, oh...there's a snag. The blogger who wrote the post, or maybe even another reader has called you out on your comments. They know you're a cowardly blogger, and they're not afraid to tell you and everyone else what you're full of. Time for evasive maneuvers! If you do everything just right and you're really, really lucky, you might just get out of there with your squeaky clean (though fake) reputation intact. The first thing to do is change the subject, put the other person on the defensive. You could try the old freedom of speech card. You could even challenge their patriotism for trying to deny your freedom of speech! (Be careful not to piss them off anymore than you already have.) Or you could play the pity card, and accuse them of picking on poor little you, calling you names, slander, etc. There's lots of things you could try, but if your victim isn't as timid and stupid as you thought they were, your reputation might be in trouble. (Too bad thought isn't your strong suit.)

CowardKnow when to quit. Like the Kenny Rogers song, know when to walk away...know when to run. Unfortunately, because you're a cowardly blogger, you more than likely have no facts and no verification to stand on. At a certain point it's best to cut your losses, instead of suffering any more humiliation at the hands of the facts. You'll live to be cowardly another day. After all, you're a cowardly blogger!

You're Only As Good As Your Last Tweet

Twitter! In Business, we've all heard the expression that you're only as good as your last deal. Today's consumer doesn't have an incredibly long memory, so it's up to us as product or service providers to represent our business to its full potential with each and every transaction.

In a case of Twitter copying business, there have been some recent changes to the Twitter interface that make each of us only as good as our last tweet.

You may or may not have noticed that Twitter has changed the following and followers screens.

On the following screen (seen below), you now see an "Actions" button which gives you the choice of Mentioning the user (addressing a tweet to a specific user by using @username to begin your tweet), Unfollowing the user, or Blocking the user. How helpful!*

Twitter Following Page

On the followers screen (seen below), you have the same "Actions" button that the following screen is equipped with, but now you also have a very convenient "Follow" button that only appears next to users who you aren't yet following. It's now very easy to scan through your pages of followers and notice which ones you aren't yet following back. (Yes I am following Jeff Belonger...I just had to unfollow him to get this picture. Don't worry Jeff, I'm coming back!) Now with just a click of a button you can make a follower a "friend" by mutually following them if you so choose. And speaking of choice, Twitter has now made it so much easier to made educated ones!

Twitter Followers Page

If you notice, next to each user's avatar and under their user name and location, there is something totally new on the following and followers page. Twitter has now started publishing in these listing your last tweet! So now when scanning over those people who are following you, it's much easier to make an educated choice whether or not you want to follow them back.

So if you see that @PanchenAlec is following you, you'll also notice a few extra details. The name listed for this account is Johngoogle. And the last tweet from the account says "May I take your order? chenese food" with a shortened URL at the end of the tweet you can probably guess that this user is a spammer. If you're not convinced, click on the URL to find a mocked up Chinese Menu with profanity built right in. This is an unfortunate reality of Twitter right now, but at least it's easier to spot the trash.

On the other hand, you might see @Jason_Pollack (pictured at the top of the following page photo) who tweets "U manifest what u think, think positively and u will manifest positivity", and you would probably think, wow that guy sounds like he might have something to offer....I should follow him back (and I highly recommend that you do).

So if you're ever tempted to sign up for one of these get 400 followers a day schemes where all you have to do is follow the people they tell you to follow and let them send out tweets from your account singing the praise of their spammy hollow progam...think twice. Instead of selling someone else's pyramid scheme, give away your own valuable knowledge and perspective. Be authentic. Be the best representative of yourself and your business because now you're only as good as your last Tweet.
