Special Places in Temecula, CA - The Corn Maze, Harvest & Pumpkin Festival
Part 2 of my visit to Big Horse Feed and my interview with Rose, Corona, the delightful owner of this unique business in Temecula, CA. Hopefully videos will come soon, but as I mentioned yesterday, the audio is an issue and will require some time in editing. :-( My apologies...
The Annual Corn Maze is an incredible 12 acre maze cut into a corn field. Not just any pattern... but the patriotic motif shown here. Just the layout and design of this are beyond me. I asked Rose how they managed to cut it out of the uge cornfield, and she said if she told me, they'd have to kill me! Uh-oh... guess that's on a "need-to-know basis"! In keeping with the ongoing patriotic theme, military familes get a 50% discount.
Rose alo told me during our interview that during the Corn Maze season, an unusual number of military aircraft do flyovers - presumably to see the maze! How awesome is that!
My thanks to Rose for her gracious help with these articles, for letting me take so many photos at the site, and for permission to use a few photos from their website, bighorsecornmaze.com. Check out the previous post for many more photos of Big Horse - it is FAR more than a mere feed store. You can shop for gifts for all your horsey friends there - jewelry, books, clothing, boots, and more in addition to the typical tack and farm supply items.

Take my word for it - Big Horse and the Corn Maze are very cool. Stop by for a visit! Lots of educational events for the kids at the Harvet Festival, too.

Special Places in Temecula, CA - Big Horse Feed & Farm Supply
This is the first in a series of articles entitled SPECIAL PLACES, focusing on local cities, in this case, Temecula, CA. There is much more to this area than real estate for sale, short sales and bank-owned properties! There are many unique and fun businesses and attractions in this town!
least, SOME of the property - there are 165 acres there!Big Horse got its unique name from the identification the community has acquired as a result of the large draft horses owned and driven by Miss Corona. Since draft horses (yes, like the Clydesdales) were not a predominant or often seen breed around the area, people always knew where the Corona Ranch was located simply by saying "Oh yeah, we know where you are. You're the one with the Big Horses!"

Big Horse Feed is really much more than a mere feed store. It was opened as a sideline to the Corona Family's farming operation of more than 75 years, and has grown into an amzing place that sells a lot more than just feed, tack and farm supplies! There is jewelry, clothing, collectibles, books, friendly service and much more!
With a staff of over 20 people, Big Horse carries products for a wide range of riding and driving disciplines. An extensive gift and book selection complement the pet and small animal departments that make this location unique. Equestrian Clinics are held throughout the year and many are held right on the property itself. Many Myler bitting clinics happen at the location since Big Horse is the sole distributor for large horse bits (anything over 5 ½") for the Myler family.

One of the coolest things for me was getting to actually meet her seriously BIG Horses - several breeds, as I recall Belgian, Clydesdale, Percheron. She took me out back where they big fellows where staying cool in the shade, and I got to say hi to them all. They are so huge, but so gentle and sweet-natured. You can see in this photo they follow Rose around like great big puppies! My horse experience is mainly with Thoroughbreds and Arabians. I thought a 17 hand gray I took care of at Del Mar was big - not a patch on these guys! You know they are big - but it isn't until you stand next to them that you realize just how massive they are. Awesome horses, really.

More events to come! Stay tuned!
I ran out of time on my last post and have a lot more photos to do from the tiny rural town of Anza, CA, which is in the mountains a mere 35 miles from Temecula, CA. These photos are from the biggest annual event in Anza, ANZA DAYS, which are held over the Fourth of July weekend. I took these 2 years ago. I hope you enjoy them.
Anza is a high desert mountain town with a lot of Old West flavor. A small, friendly community, people wave at their neighbors and even visitors as they drive past one another. Average height above sea level is 4,000 - 4,500 feet. It's usually about ten degrees cooler here in Anza than in Temecula.

Anza is HORSE COUNTRY!

BIG HORSE COUNTRY!

The Temecula Valley Young Marines participate in Anza Days.

In memory of Jeremy West, one of our local fallen warriors.

Anza is home to many llamas and their people!

Our friends at CDF - California Department of Forestry - are always popular participants!

Anza, CA is one of the few really unspoiled rural areas left in Southern California. A mountain own about 35 miles away from Palm Desert in one direction and Palm Desert in the other, it surrounds the Cahuilla Indian Reservation. Most lots are 2 1/2 acres in size or more, and many are 20 acres or more. Perfect for horse and dog breeders and fanciers.

A brochure I did a few years ago to attract artists to the area. I was with a local Coldwell BAnker office which no longer exists.
