Generators: Are They Worth the Investment?

While not an expert on generators, I recognize how critical they are for home owners during power outages. We've had several outages in New England these last 2 months, so I've been wanting to do further research and share my findings ... as #1, you MUST insure proper ventilation so the fumes from the generator don't get into your home which can be deadly.

Right now I'm writing my January newsletter on Home Improvements, Cost versus Value. I was surprised, and thankful, to see they've included a home generator on their list of home improvement projects. Maybe you'll be more comfortable investing in this new home feature once you realize that on resale, you can expect to recoup more than 50% of the cost? Generator Cost vs Value, 2008

Here is the the description of the Back-Up Power Generator, in Remodeling Magazine's 2008 Cost vs Value Report. "Install Guardian or similar electrical back-up system with capacity for providing 70 amps of emergency power in two 240-volt circuits and six 120-volt circuits. Assume existing LP gas supply. Include generator mounted on 2x4 concrete or composite pad; automatic transfer switch, load center; exterior disconnect, and grounding rod. Include 30 feet of conduit and electrical cable for generator connections; grounded cable for circuits; 5 feet of flexible fuel line for connection to existing rigid gas supply line; and automotive-type storage battery."

Ice Storms Also Beautiful

I am aware that 1,000s of people have (some still) been through hardships due to the recent ice storms and we’re certainly trying to help out in any way we can.

At the same time, when we can … we should take time to enjoy the beauty that our state offers, and the icy landscape out in the woods was beautiful this weekend. Here are some great photos of my husband and chocolate lab enjoying a hike while I was home working.

New England Loses Power Due to Ice Storm

Hopefully everyone who lost power, or worse is still without power, found a warm place to stay last night. We’re also fortunate that temperatures are rising and most areas of Massachusetts and Southern NH did not go below freezing last night.

Unfortunately more than 800,000 customers were still without power as reported by CNN last night. The freezing rain came Thursday night and Friday, knocking down trees which took out all sorts of lines. We couldn’t even call customers to cancel Friday jobs as almost noone had working phones.

Here are some photos I took in Portsmouth yesterday showing some of the tree damage, and contrasting Christmas lights. The challenge to getting repairs completed:

  • First the trees have to be removed and only then …
  • Utility utility companies start reconnecting downed wires
  • Listening to people, the priority is power for heat & minimizing frozen pipes
  • … phone, cable and Internet will follow after power.
