How do you select the insurance agent you refer?

So this is more a discussion point than a blog, and I want your feedback. When someone is working with a real estate agent, how does the question of who they have for home insurance come up? If someone is moving from another town, I can see them needing a referral to a local insurance agent. But if they're just moving in town, can I assume that the topic of who their insurance agent is doesn't really come up?

And what type of thank you do you like when you send a referral to someone? When I did mortgages years ago, I would send a gift card or something. But with insurance, I'm not making as much per policy.

What I do offer the real estate agents that I know is the ability to keep them up to date with life changes in the clients they refer to me. When a client has a baby, I know. I can then look up if a real estate agent referred that client, and let the real estate agent know so a card or something can be sent. If there's an accident or home fire, I can inform that real estate agent as well.

When I have multiple real estate agents referring to me, it is not becasue I can send leads back to everyone. But I am chosen becasue I can take care of the customer and can get the job done. And I can keep the agent informed with life changing events in the customer's life.

So it comes back to the beginning question. How do you choose who you refer for home insurance? How did you choose your personal insurance agent? Thanks.
