New Orleans Farigrounds Starting Races 1 Week Early in 2009

Race fans rejoice, neighbors be warned. The New Orleans Fairgrounds Racecourse announced recently that it will start its 138th season of horse racing on November 6. It will run, as usual, through the end of March in plenty of time to prepare the Fairgrounds for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival ("Jazz Fest").

Can't wait! As a neighbor in the Farigrounds Triangle neighborhood, we never fail to meet wonderful folks from all over the world, not to mention clients! It's another of our longstanding traditions that make me love this city all over again. Mint julips, anyone?

Greater New Orleans Community Data Center

For locals and business interests, or just curious fans of New Orleans, check out the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center web site. It's got all the numbers by neighborhood of demographic recovery in addition to helpful stuff like zip code and neighborhood maps, and much more.

It's a pooling of non-profit knowledge and expertly assembled and run by Greater New Orleans Non-Profit Knowledge Works. Allison Plyer is awesome as the face and voice of this group on the Internet! The link is:

This month Allison has posted a 10 minute video on the recovery effort (hard to believe we still have to use that word after 4 years). It's on the home page of the site. Check it out!

The Rebirth of Canal Street, New Orleans...better than ever!

Article in City Business Featuring My Switch to RE/MAX

When I came to RE/MAX Real Estate Partners a few months ago, it was no secret that it was a decision that came down to money. I blogged briefly about it on Active Rain, and next thing you know a reporter from New Orleans City Business found it and developed a story about folks "jumping ship." The article can be found here:

I'm glad the reporter put the line in about not having any comlaints about Prudential Gardner; I didn't think he would. I love the folks in my old office and still talk to them often. Meanwhile, my new boss says he liked the publicity!

Former Six Flags Site to be Rebuilt as Nickelodeon Universe New Orleans

The City of New Orleans announced that the former site of Six Flags amusement park in New Orleans East, which has been closed since Katrina, is getting a new lease on life. It will be rebuilt and reopened as Nickelodeon's first stand alone theme park, called Nickelodeon Universe New Orleans, and will include a water park. The park is shceduled to go under construction in the fall of 2009, and open late 2010. The detailed article from New Orleans City Business can be found here.

This is great news for continuing efforts to move on from Katrina, not only for New Orleans East which desperately needs the return of its businesses, but also for the entire New Orleans metro area. A world class attraction like this in addition to the places tourists already visit will be a boost in jobs, spending, and resolve the issue of Six Flags' default on their ground lease which the city hsa been eating for years.

Of course with characters in tow like Spongebob and Dora, we'll also add to attractions like the Audubon Zoo, Acquarium of the Americas, City Park, and several other intitiatives aimed at families. Let's face it...our most famous assets, Bourbon Street and Mardi Gras, are largely not kid friendly.

Congrats to the city and Nickelodeon for doing the right thing. I for one can't wait for the opening.

Fairgrounds Triangle Neighborhood Night Out

My neighborhood, the Farigrounds Triangle recently held its Night Out Against Crime and it was a great success. So many neighbors and even homeowners with rental property in the area braved the heat to join the fun and discuss important safety issues and ideas.

Thanks to the Farigrounds Triangle Neighborhood Association for all the effort. It was fantastic. Sorry for the grainy picture from my camera phone!
