Big Home Boom Now Has Led to Big Home Buying Bonanza

12-08-08
Troy Ott

The large homes called McMansions or "suburban castles" that were all the rage in the last ten years have led to golden buying opportunities now as some of those homes are becoming victim to foreclosures. These homes offer loads of bedrooms, bathrooms, walk in closets, and a game room for the kids, plus the obligatory huge country kitchen where everyone can hang out. Exercise caution in selection of a neighborhood in which to buy one of these homes. Be careful to choose homes in neighborhoods where foreclosure is an aberration not the rule. Recovery will come soonest in an area long populated with families who have school age children. Avoid a distant suburb if possible, do not buy a home more than 30 minutes from an employment center where the economy is relatively steadfast. Gas price fluctuation has also made distant commutes implausible as well; keep all this in mind when selecting a community in which to buy. Let schools be your guide. Good schools are the key to real estate valuation thus choosing a community with a top tier elementary program is an absolute must. Look for well built homes with custom features. Look for custom cabinetry and wood trim that are well finished, also look for architectural grade shingles i.e superior roofing materials. You may also go door to door and ask neighbors about home quality and energy efficiency within their community. Remember all this info is invaluable but a REALTOR'S expertise will be most invaluable to you as make a final decision on where and when to buy. I happen to know an excellent Broker/REALTOR, you can reach him at 803-917-1893

Decorating for the Holidays

12-03-08

Its that time of year again and if you haven't already decorated for the holidays, here are some tips for creating an incredibly easy, yet beautiful holiday display.

Start with the Basics
Purchase a cage-type florist foam and soak it in water. Then attach the cage to a lamppost, mailbox, or even columns with florist wire.

Add Greenery
You can add almost any type: cedar, magnolia, Hemlock, Japanese aucuba, holly, fir, boxwood. You can use what is in your yard or you can purchase these from a florist. Clip the stems at an angle for longer life and a length long enough to make it easy to insert into foam. Start with longer, less dense pieces first. Add coarse textures and then fill with fine-textured last.

Finish With Fruit
Use plenty of citrus but also include Lady apples and Seckel pears as these are traditional fruits included in this style arrangement. Wooden grilling skewers are best for attaching fruit. Cut them to the appropriate length.

Keep It Fresh
This arrangement should stay fresh for about a month, but if it hasn't rained, pour a pitcher of water onto foam as needed. You may encounter birds looking for a quick snack so you may need to replace pieces as needed.

Make It Yours
Customize your decorations and add you own touch. Add lights, bows, candy canes, vintage metal toys, ornaments, or even seed ornaments for the birds.

Do Not Let the Current Housing Crisis Ruin Your Marriage

The present day financial crisis, coupled with the overall economic downturn could be exerting tremendous stress on your domestic bliss. If so, consider these ways to right your domestic ship. Get on the same page with your spouse to formulate a plan for handling your financial issues, avoid at all costs faulting one another, attend a relationship workshop, such a workshop whether secular or religious affiliated could give you both the needed problem solving methods to work through your predicament. Read books that can help strengthen your relationship. Books can provided valuable insight as you both navigate thorny financial issues. Marriage counseling may also be a panacea; it can help you both regain the trust required to resolve your financial issues as unified team, not as warring factions. Lastly look to financial counseling for help with your mortgage problems. Even if your relationship is solid you should both be committed to searching for strategies to reduce your monthly costs and avert potential foreclosure. In this case you may want to go straight to a financial planner or housing counselor who can help you sort through the myriad of options available to you and your spouse. Whatever the case, make the most of your situation and get off your collective asses and make something happen!!! Carpe Diem!!!

Relocating to Columbia has many advantages. Not only were we listed in the Top 25 cities expected to stay strong during the downturn in the real estate market, but as the state capital we are surrounded by local, state, and federal government, corporations and small businesses, a major SEC university, military base, a new research center partnered with USC called Innovista, numerous rivers and lakes, and incredible restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. The City of Columbia's website explains it this way:

"See a concert at the Colonial Center, an ice show at the Carolina Coliseum, a Broadway show at the Koger Center, a national dance touring company at The Township, a regatta at Lake Murray, a replica of a three ton white shark at the State Museum, historic homes from the 16th century, festivals, concerts and an amazing view at Finlay Park. Catch a theatrical production at one of Columbia's many theatres. Walk through the tallest trees on the East Coast in the Congaree National Park. Tailgate at Williams-Brice Stadium as the University of South Carolina battles in Southeastern Conference football. Enjoy food from around the world at one of many festivals. Listen to one of music's hottest performers at the South Carolina State Fair. Play challenging golf course. Visit Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden, consistently rated one of the nation's "10 Great Zoos." In short, Columbia really does have it all!"
