FLORENCE NEWS AND REAL ESTATE UPDATE

04-03-09
Rose Sutton

Hello from Florence, Oregon. It is currently partly sunny and it is not raining. Just give it a few minutes and it probably will be. This morning we even had some hail. It is a crazy year. The gas prices are low at $2.09 a gallon for regular at Fred Meyer. Last year at this time I believe they were in the $3.00 range.

As for the Real Estate Market it is an up and down roller coaster. I have collected and compiled the listing and sales information from the RMLS for the last 2 months. follow the link to view this info.

DEAD FIN WHALE AT HECETA HEAD LIGHTHOUSE

YES, IT IS TRUE! A GIANT 55' WHALE HAS BEACHED AND IS DEAD. AS OF YESTERDAY THE PEOPLE IN GREEN CAME AND TOOK SAMPLES AND THEN A LOCAL COMPANY WAS HIRED TO DIG A HOLE AND BURY IT. THAT WAS THEIR SECOND PLAN. PLAN A WAS TOO DIG A HOLE IN THE HIGH TIDE LINE AND USE A DOZER TO PUSH IT IN THE OCEAN AND HOPE THAT IT WOULD KEEP GOING OUT TO SEA. YEA, RIGHT! THAT SOUNDS SMART. ANYWAY, THEY DUG A 50' HOLE BEFORE THEY MEASURED THE WHALE SO THEN THEY HAD TO DIG SOME MORE TO MAKE IT 57' LONG AND 11' DEEP. I HAVE A BUNCH ICS OF THIS AND THEN THE ULTIMATE WAS WHEN THEY STARTED CUTTING IT OPEN. IT WAS GROSS AND IT SURE DID SMELL BAD. IN THE END, THE TAIL DIDN'T FIT INTO THE HOLE. CRAZINESS. IF YOU WANT TO SEE PICTURES GO TO MYSPACE WEB PAGE AT http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=424706450&albumId=1111940 AND CHECK IT OUT. BE PREPARED IT IS VERY GROSS, VERY GROSS!

LIFE IS BETTER IN FLORENCE

Yes, I am still here. Sorry for taking such a long absence. Boy, have I been busy! Working at United Country and now at the Le Chateau Motel, too. It makes for some long days but it is worth it not to loose my home. I am happy to have this second job.

Florence is still the most beautiful place I have ever lived. We always have affordable gas prices because there is too much competition with the large franchise stores who now have their own gas stations, Fred Meyer & Safeway for example. The little guys have to take a loss to keep up. Florence offers a nice variety of restaurants and some are even affordable but most of them close by 10:00pm so if your a night person you will have to go to the Three River's Casino to get something decent to eat. That place is open all night and is like a little community all it's own. We have awesome dunes for quads or horses and long beaches for beachcombing.Or you can just take a stroll and inhale the fresh air coming off of the ocean while you enjoy the exercise.l miss the long drives we used to take on the back roads. Here that means mountains and steep trails ,that my old cadillac isn't mean't for. We would just go sometimes without caring where we would end up. We would stop every half hour or so and get out and take pictures and check out the interesting plants, trees, and brush that coastal Oregon is so blessed with. We like to take the North Fork and sometimes when we get to the covered bridge going east we would take that road and sometimes we would continue on up the Upper North Fork rd and stop at Pawn Trail for a look at the creek and maybe walk a little ways on the trail. There was a road that went up beyoind the Pawn Trail called Rodger;s Ridge and it would go all the way up and around the mountain but a few years ago it suffered a devastating slid that took most of the blacktop with it. Now only small 4-wheel drives can get up there. The thing I found the strangest was that old blacktop road had curbs and yellow paint stripes on the side as if it was a regular road. I have some neat pictures of that slide. Come to Florence and enjoy all of the wonders of the Oregon Coast.
