Your attack on a first page of Google search should definitely start with your website, byt there are a number of other tactics how to keep your face on the first page consistently.
First start with key word research and look what's out there on the first and second page of Google.
Are there any PR websites, video sharing websites and blogs that allow you to put your content and compete?
Next prepare your battle plan for a specific key word. For example: When you enter your key word, you see that Prlog.org has an article in the middle of the page. Write an article with your key word and upload it to Prlog.org. Also upload your photo with the article. Most of the time Google publishes new content with a picture and it attracts more attention.
Then look if Google publishes Google maps with website entries on that page. If yes - open a new local business account and you will show higher than competition with a map, which always more visible.
Next look up what video sharing websites are published on the first page if any. Most popular: YouTube, Metacafe, Revver, Vineo and Google video. Optimize your video for your key word.
