2010 US Census is going to Start in a Remote Village in Alaska

The 2010 Census count will begin in a remote Alaskan Village called Noorvik. The U.S. Census Bureau Officials shared the news on Thursday, during a presentation. The Bureau is preparing for the months of counting heads. Not literally, but you get the idea.

The Census is conducted every 10 years. It's important that each person is accounted for. The census count is not merely a head count to find out how many people are living in each state. It's great to know the population of Alaska but that's not the only reason for the Census. The Census determines how much aid/money each state will get. In 2000, the population in Alaska was 626,900. With an expected population growth, it's estimated that Alaska might have as many as 679,700 residents in 2008.

The Census count may change the politcal dynamic of Alaska also. Since the migration to the bigger cities, such as Anchorage, Eagle River, Wasilla, and Palmer from more remote areas, affects all of these towns, there may be some shifting in the legislature this year. It seems as though Anchorage might pick up another seat in the house, but we won't know until 2010.

I just read a story about Victor Vangelakos and his family living in a 32 story condo all by themselves. They are the only family that is occupying a unit in the Huge 32 Story Condo building. While the other buyers were able to swap contracts to buy a condo next door, Vangelakos and his family was unable to do so because their lender did not allow it. Read more here.
