DBPR now accepting applications for Mold Assessors (inspectors)

July 1, 2010

Finally, after years of waiting the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation is accepting applications for Mold Assessors and Mold Remediators. Are we excited? you betcha! The sad part is many good mold inspection companies have disappeared during the wait. Since the Real Estate market is part of the mold clientele and home inspectors offer mold testing / inspections and many companies could not compete.

Home Inspectors will be issued a license from the DBPR too - BUT it does not cover mold related services. Mold Assessor and Home Inspector are two different licenses with separate requirements.

Qualified individuals will have no problem obtaining a mold assessor license. The recently passed grandfathering provision of the law is effective until March of 2011.

After March of 2010 Mold Assessors will need 4 years of experience or 1 year of experience (with specific college degree) under the supervision of a licensed mold assessor.

To apply for a mold assessor license anytime the inspector must qualify for the required insurance coverage:

  • "INSURANCE: Applicants for a Mold Assessor license are required to attest that they have obtained general liability and errors and omissions insurance for both preliminary and post remediation mold assessment in the amount of no less than $1 million dollars as determined by statute."

Real Mold inspectors already have or qualify for the insurance coverage. The insurance coverage requirement is important. The fact that many do not qualify for insurance is expected to "clean up" the business by many. If they do not qualify for the insurance maybe they should not be doing the job.
