Patterson is a town in Putnam County, New York, United States. The population was 11,306 at the 2000 census. The town is named after early farmer Matthew Paterson. The reason Patterson was spelled with two "t"s was due to the looseness in which Paterson spelled his own last name. By oral tradition however, the town is said to be spelled with two "t"s to avoid confusion with Paterson, New Jersey. The Town of Patterson is in the northeast part of the county. Interstate 84 passes through the southwest part of the town. Just north of Southeast NY, Patterson NY is approximately 10 minutes north of 684 and has it's own Metro North Train Station with stops all the way into Grand Central Station NYC. The Town of Southeast NY is referred to as Brewster NY in many circles which can be confusing. However, Brewster NY is in fact a village located within the Town of Southeast NY. This probably started because most highway signs leading to the Town of Southeast say Brewster NY. The school system for Southeast is also known as the Brewster Central School District.
The Town of Southeast, NY, which was founded in 1788, is located at the crossroads of Interstate highways Route 684 and Route 84, and State Routes 22, 312, 6 and 202. The Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line has two stops that service the area at Brewster Village and Southeast Station off Route 312.
Just a one hour train ride into Grand Central Station in NYC or approximately one hour drive into New York City makes Southeast NY an excellent commuter's community. In fact many people who have a home or condo in Southeast NY work in NYC or lower Westchester County NY.
