Chick-fil-A in Edgewater Maryland, we didn't want to leave!

Dave and I were out in Edgewater one afternoon and we got really hungry so we decided to see if we could find any "crack chicken" (that's what Dave's friend Billy calls Chick-fil-A!). I have never been to a Chick-fil-A but was game. As we entered, one of the employees held the door for us, we said thank you and he said "my pleasure" and smiled at us.

We were a little taken aback - "my pleasure?" - we both looked at each other and I could tell he was as surprised as I was.

Then we went up to the counter and the lady behind the counter said "May I help the next guest please?" with a big smile on her face! Still surprised, we went to the counter and ordered the chicken strips and waffle fries meal.

We got our food and sat down. A few minutes later a man came by with a tray of samples and different sauces, smiling at us and asking if we'd like to sample the new "chick-fil-a sauce". We did and it was delicious.

Then a few minutes later another lady came by, asked us how our meal was and if she could get us anything. Then she gave us after-meal MINTS!

I have to tell you, we didn't want to leave!!! Can you imagine, that kind of service at a fast-food place? Needless to say, the place was packed and the line of cars wrapped around the building. We normally don't get service like that at sit-down restaurants. Really amazing.

But you know, that should be the norm, shouldn't it? Friendly service with a smile? It really didn't take any extra effort for the employees to smile and be polite, trying to make our meal a pleasant experience. This is something we all should strive for and next time you're in Edgewater and want a nice meal, make sure to stop at Chick-fil-A on Rt. 2 South!

Watch out for Rental Scams on the Internet

As a seller or landlord, you want your agent to advertise all over the place and you may be advertising all over as well. If you are advertising on different internet billboards, make sure to be careful of scams.

You've probably heard of the Nigerian money scams and they are also targetting people who advertise on internet billboards like Craigslist. I am hoping that most people will not respond to these, but I'm sure some get sucked in. This is an actual e-mail I just received which was sent in response to an advertisement that I posted for a single family home in Severna Park, Maryland.

Notice the person is supposed to be a "doctor" in the UK, but the grammar of this letter is poor and if this guy really is from the UK, wouldn't English be his first language? Also, the advertisement was for a single family home, not an "apartment".

This scam works similarly to the Nigerian money scams in that if you respond to the person and let's say the rent is $11,000 for 6 months. They'll say their company is going to pay for it, or for some reason they have all this cash that they are going to send you in advance. This guy will say he doesn't even need to see the house nor does he need to send anyone out, he'll just take your word for it over the internet. Then he'll send you maybe $16000 in a bogus Western Union payment, instructing you to deduct the $11,000 and send him back the extra after the payment clears. The payment will eventually bounce, but the bank will "clear" it sooner and you'll take the extra money out, send it to the bogus renter, and when the check does actually bounce, you'll be in the hole in your bank account and will be required to pay the bank back.

Here's the actual e-mail I received:

Midas Muffler in Gambrills (Crofton), Maryland

I wanted to share a great experience I had recently at my local Midas Muffler. This is the one in the median strip on Route 3, between the "Crofton" McDonalds and Popeyes. It's technically in Gambrills, but Gambrills connects to Crofton. Anyway, I was coming back one evening from showing houses over in Glen Burnie when my air conditioning stopped working, a couple of my warning lights came on and my car was making more noise than normal. I figured I needed oil really bad (the noise) and thought I had to replace a fuse.

The next morning I went straight to Jiffy Lube which is next to Midas. I like this Jiffy Lube because they don't try to do a lot of add-ons like some places do. I went to another local oil change place and the guy thought he had a sucker - came out with a laundry list of things he "recommended" that I do to my car - $600 worth of miscellaneous things. I haven't gone back there. I was in the waiting room when one of the guys came in holding a heavy metal circular object, about 8" in diameter. He said he found it in the engine compartment. They finished the oil change and all the guys pushed my car over to Midas. The guy at Midas said it was my harmonic balancer. Uh-oh, that doesn't sound good. Sure enough, he called the dealer and the dealer price was over $500 just for this little piece of metal. He actually told me that I could order it from the dealer myself to save money. I called the dealer and I could buy it directly for about $100 less. As I was talking with the dealer, my husband, who came to rescue me, was flipping through the yellow pages and suggested I call Advanced Auto Parts. They ended up having a reproduction part for only $123 and they would have it sent from their Pittsburgh location to arrive the next morning! They also had the two belts that I needed for less than half the price of the dealer.

The guy at Midas said I could leave my car out in the parking lot until the next day. I went to Annapolis to Advanced Auto Parts the next morning to pick up the parts, and Midas installed them for me for a very reasonable labor charge and had the car ready in about two hours. Can't beat service like that. I hear so many horror stories about car repair shops and have always been leary of them because of it so I wanted to share a story about a place that I feel I can trust!

Working without a Buyer's Agent

I just saw this great "skit" between two people, a Realtor who is representing the seller of a home, and a potential buyer who wants to save money by going out and calling off signs (calling the agent for the seller whose sign is posted in the yard), having the sellers agent show them the house, then going back to an online real estate company that gives them back part of the commission. Is this really the way to save money?
