The South Maui Oceanfront Marathon is scheduled to take place on the 24th this month! It starts in Wailea and runs along the oceanfront to Kamehameha Iki park near the Banyan Tree in Lahaina.

What an exciting course! And what a long one, for anyone familiar with the drive from Wailea to Lahaina. The views along this route are positively stunning and in all likelihood, runners will have a tough time not being distracted by its beauty or by the usual whale activity just offshore this time of year. It should be fun going through the tunnel on the way to Lahaina as well.

The Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational is slated to begin on February 13! This is where some of the finest plein air artists from Maui and the mainland get together to render some of Maui's most beautiful scenery into breathtaking works of art.

The 26 artists scheduled to participate will spend about a week taking advantage of the event's select locations for outdoor painting, including Maui's upcountry vistas, majestic mountains, pristine beaches, historic towns and majestic mountains.

The population of Hawaii is growing at a nice healthy rate, economic stresses aside. According to a recent report by the U.S. Census Bureau, state-by-state estimates for 2009 had Hawaii's population at almost 1.3 million.

Researchers from the University of Hawaii were contracted in June to survey the ocean floor between the Hawaiian Islands to find the best routes for undersea power cables. The project involves connecting cables between Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, and Maui. Nine routes were recommended last week.

The report from UH had a price tag of $1.5 million. Its purpose is to get the islands onto one electrical grid, which would allow the transmission of renewable energy generated in Maui County to Oahu. The cable is expected to be at least thirty miles long and able to transfer 400 megawatts of power.
