Gary Collins strives to educate consumers to promote dryer vent fire safety awareness with "Don't Let Your Dryer Start A Fire" Campaign

Cleveland, OH -- October is Fire Prevention month across the United States; Dryer Vent Wizard, Dry Clothes, Safe Homes is supporting the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), in fire prevention awareness efforts by launching "Don't Let Your Dryer Start a Fire, Keep Your Home Safe and Sound," campaign.

"We find most consumers think it's normal for their dryer to take more than one cycle to dry a load of clothing; they are not aware that this is a warning sign of potential fire hazard," says Gary Collins, DVW franchise owner who is part of a nationwide chain of dryer vent cleaning, repair, replacement and alteration specialists in the U.S.

During this month, consumers are urged to become aware by visiting http://www.dryerventwizard.com for fire prevention tips and a list of warning signs to look for. "Clothes dryers are more likely to be a fire hazard than a furnace or stove," says Gary. "Dryer vent cleaning and proper maintenance is the key to prevention and saving on energy costs," Gary explained in a recent interview.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, dryer fires account for an average of 15,000 fires with an approximate $88 Million in property damage, 15 deaths and 400 injuries annually. "Failure to clean" was citied as the leading factor contributing to clothes dryer fires in residential buildings.

In joining efforts with the NFPA for Fire Prevention month, Dryer Vent Wizard is providing the following advice to consumers to minimize the risk of dryer fires:

•· Be sure that dryer vent systems are up to meet current UL safety standards

•· Replace any plastic, vinyl or foil vent with semi-rigid or solid metal venting

•· Check lint screens before and clean them after each load of laundry

•· Wash lint screens with soap and water every few months to remove residue left behind by fabric softeners

•· Have dryer vents professionally cleaned and inspected annually

•· Don't keep combustibles like chemical cleaning products or chemical laden rags near dryers.

Gary also advises consumers of the following warning signs to watch for:

  • Dryer taking more than one cycle to get clothes dry
  • No visible lint on the screen
  • Dryer repeatedly stops during cycle
  • Clothes have a moldy smell or are hot after drying

Dryer Vent Wizard, Dry Clothes Safe Homes is the largest chain of dryer vent cleaning, repair, replacement and alteration specialists in the U.S. with nearly 50 franchisees in major markets in the U.S. "I make sure each of my customers understands the importance of proper dryer vent maintenance before I leave their home," said Gary. Save Time, Money and Avoid a Fire Hazard by Having Your Dryer Vent Cleaned

Is your dryer taking longer and longer to dry your clothes? Did your clothes used to be dry after running one cycle but now it takes 1 ½ to 2 cycles or more? Does your dryer sometimes shut down during a cycle and can only be restarted after it cools down? Has your dryer ever had to have a fuse replaced that stopped the heating circuit function?

If your answer is "yes" to any of the above questions, you may assume that the dryer needs replaced, but the remedy may be easier than you think! The most likely reason for the conditions mentioned above is that the dryer vent is clogged or blocked with lint accumulation. If the dryer cannot efficiently expel the hot humid air, it will run longer than is necessary. This not only affects the length of your drying times, but also increases your utility bill whether gas or electric. This also causes more wear on your dryer because it has to run longer than normal. Over time this decreases the life of the dryer.

Lastly, the most important reason to have your dryer vent inspected is the potential fire hazard caused by the dryer running hotter than normal. So, if you have experienced any of the above-mentioned symptoms, or the dryer and/or clothes feel hot to the touch, please contact me for an inspection of the dryer vent.

Advice from Gary, Greater Cleveland, Ohio: Energy Savings with "Dryer Vent Repair" and Maintenance

In these days of rising prices on nearly everything you may be looking for ways to cut down expenses and put a little more money into your pocketbook. One way to do that is to make sure your clothes dryer is running efficiently to cut back on the cost of energy used to operate it.

While this may not make any sense now, read on and you'll quickly understand how much money you are losing with a less than efficient clothes dryer.

A clothes dryer, running the way it is supposed to, should be able to dry a load of laundry in one cycle. It should be able to dry and fluff your clothes, removing lint as it goes. The average cost of doing a load is about $.75 in a regular dryer.

But then things can slow down. During drying cycles, as lint leaves the drum where your clothes are, the lint gets trapped a number of places in your dryer vent system. The first place this lint will usually get caught is your lint trap. You should make it a habit to clean out the lint trap before each load of laundry as the more lint that is in the trap, the less hot air can move through the system. Improper ventilation causes overheating in the system which results in higher energy consumption and it can be a fire hazard.

Even if you do clean out the lint trap, there are other places lint builds up to cause trouble. Lint can sneak around and past the trap and get into other parts of the dryer mechanism. From getting clogged in the frame of the dryer to getting stuck in the chute or even blocking the vent that takes the hot air outside of your house, there are plenty of ways the lint can cause a problem.

The more this lint accumulates, the less efficient your clothes dryer will be. Eventually it may take 2 to 3 cycles to get one load of clothing dry. You have now tripled or quadrupled the cost of your drying bill.

So, how do you keep your costs down? By making sure your dryer is in good working order. This means having a professional dryer vent cleaning done at least once a year. A professional will come in and clean the inside of the machine and with the use of special tools clean out the ducts and the vent at the end of the line. A properly maintained dryer vent system will help the dryer to operate efficiently to save money on monthly utility bills.
