A couple of times a weeks we drive by the houses we oversee - cut and water the grass, check the boardings on the property, etc. - to make sure the property is still secure. Yesterday, we were driving through communities in Fontana, Rancho, and Pomona and I was deeply saddened by what I saw. I saw at least ten homes that were "boarded up" with the old school boarding technique and evidence that no one had been back to check on that property since then. I say this because in all ten cases, the board on the back of the house had been removed and signs of squatters was present. We saw bicycles leaning against back fences; jugs of water and small radios on back patios; extension cords, etc. In one case, the main house looked like it has some fire damage on the inside. Possibly from the person staying there trying to stay warm and the fire got out of hand.
Although empty residences are a hot topic for communities, they are not a popular subject for some enders. I called one Real Estate office while I was in the drive way to tell them that the kitchen widow had been broken and it looked like someone was climbing on the fence and entering the house through that window. The response I got was, "the house is in escrow". Shaking my head, informed the nice woman that I left my card in the door incase it fell out of escrow.
