Mission Viejo can be proud of their award winning float entry to the 2009 Rose Parade. The ebtry “Making a Splash” won the Judges' Special Award for the float with the most spectacular showmanship and dramatic impact. A key feature of float was a 20-foot-by-8-foot pool representing Lake Mission Viejo. Nadadores swimmers Chloe Sutton, Mark Anderson and Patrick Early, spent the morning somersaulting and canon-balling into the 8-foot-deep pool as it traveled down the parade route. Others riding the float were Olympians, Soccer player Julie Foudy, diver Greg Louganis, and swimmer Brian Goodell. Images depicted on the sides of the float were taken from the murals at the Oso Creek Trailhead at Margurite Pkwy near Estanciero Drive.
Although the video is a little unsteady, you can see some of the detail that float builders put into the display. According to the Rose Parade rules, all surfaces must be covered with flowers or plant material in their natural colors.

Snow In Sunny Southern California

Wednesday's rain storms brought a fantastic dusting of snow to the local mountains. Our closest mountain tops, Modjeska and Santiago peaks are just 3.5 miles (as the crow flies) from my office in Rancho Santa Margarita. The snow will probably last only a few more days before the sunshine melts it, but the view today is outrageous! And that's how I like my snow...at a distance!
You see, growing up in Chicago, snow fall had a totally different meaning; shoveling the mile long sidewalk in front of out house (it sure seemed that long back then), cars stuck in snow drifts or skidding out of control and all of the heavy winter garments needed to survive the bitter cold. Here in California, I can look up at the mountans, ooh and ah, and then carry on in shirt sleeves or a light jacket. For the recreationally inclined, Big Bear ski resorts are only a two hour drive or "real" snow skiing at Mammoth Mountain, about 350 miles north.
