Ok most of you know I am a big racing fan NASCAR, Off-Road Rally, Indy, Formula 1, If it has a motor and they are racing I am there....Well just about everybody knows about Indianapolis Motor Speedway if you don't click on the link....
You know your driving down the freeway and some crazy (person) goes flying by you like you are standing still and what do you say.....Hey buddy what do you think this is the Indianapolis 500? or you may say something I don't think I will write here.....but you know what it is...
Anyway this is about what almost didn't happen ...Back during WW2 when we were fighting the Axis powers The Raceway was pretty much shut down ..Hey we were at WAR a big one...So the race track was not taken care of. The owner of it at the time Edward Rickenbacher was going to tear it down and sell off the land...But along came Tony Hulman and he talked Edward into selling him the track for $750,000 a pretty good price in 1945 for 320 acres....
So on this day November 14th 1945 the race track was sold and history was saved...makes me happy to know.
After 6 months of hard work In May of 1946, the American Automobile Association ran its first postwar 500-mile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Known as The 500 or Indy 500 or better known as The Indianapolis 500....
Just think back in 1945 a few Realtors may have been happy to sell off the land and make a few bucks. But thanks to Tony Hulman Millions of fans have enjoyed Racing at the now famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway...And so can you now...
And you know if it wasn't for Tony you could be yelling at the crazy speeders flying by you on the freeway....saying hey buddy what do you think this is the Geneva 500?....or something like that. It just doesn't sound right...
But thanks to Tony Hulman you get to yell Hey buddy what do you think this is the Indianapolis 500? now that just has a beautiful ring to it and just sounds soooooo right ....don't you think?.....
anyway thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed a little racing history today....peace zane
My little racer at Pocono this summer maybe we will try Indy next summer I think he would like that.....
In 1983 I went to Washington DC with my classmates to see the sites. It was one of the best field trips I was ever on. We went to a lot of places that week. and did a lot of things...
The National Mall
Lincoln Memorial
Washington Monument
Jefferson Memorial
Arlington Memorial and House
Just to name a few....
Looking back now when you are 13-14 years old some things just don't mean as much as when your older. I remember going to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the only thing I remember about that was saying at "least my dads name isn't on there" then thinking wow someones dad's name is on there. I took some photos of it and that was it.
Now that I am older...just a little older...I have a great appreciation for that memorial...I am still thankful my dad is not on it. But still all those military people that lost their lives over there. If you have never been to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial you are really missing out on something beautiful...
Now I was surfin the net the other day and came across something really cool. If you will never have a chance to get to the Wall you now have other choices..
The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall you can see the people who fought and died when it comes to a town near you or read some of their story's here this is an amazing tribute to them the other night I was on this site for about 3 hours just reading just about everything I could... The Virtual Wall so be prepared to spend some time on this site it is really great.
On this day in history 1982. A 21 year old art student had her art dedicated in Washington DC.. Her name is Maya Lin she beat out 1,420 other competition submissions.
November 13, 1982 - Memorial dedication after a march to its site by thousands of Vietnam War veterans. As a National Memorial it was administratively listed on the National Register of Historic Places the same day.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a national war memorial in Washington, D.C. It honors members of the U.S. armed forces who fought in the Vietnam War and who died in service or are still unaccounted for.
thanks for stopping by my blog....peace zane
