Post 508

This post is about the letter that my sweet caren lady, hand delivered to the Selectman's Office.

As you can see in this photo, the Charlestown Transfer Station is not very handicap accessible or friendly!

Charlestown Recycle

This next photo show's the end of the middle step is broken. This step has been this way for over a month. If these were stairs at a home that I was doing an Inspection of, this sure would be in my report as needing to be fixed.

Steps at Transfer Station

May 12,2009

Town of Charlestown

Selectman or Whomever can help

Some problems, and possible solutions with the Charlestown Transfer Station:

The transfer station is not very handicap accessible/friendly:

I would suggest that a ramp be built to allow access to the recycle bins. As it is, we have to go up and down the stairs for the glass and then up and down the other stairs for ore plastic/tin and paper products.

Lots of broken & shattered glass:

I would suggest that the bin that is used for paper be used for glass instead. As it is, the open bin that is being used for glass. Every week I see people stand on the ground and just throw their glass up into the bin, causing shattered glass to fly everywhere, on the ground and on the stairs and walkways. I have even been hit in the face with shattering glass thrown by others and I have gotten cuts on my hands, as I have to hold onto the railings to get up and down the stairs and they always have glass shard on them. Using the bin with the restricted holes in the top would force people to go up on to the walkway to dump their glass into the bin.

Bee's (summer is upon us again)

I am severely allergic to bee stings, I'm sure there are others that are also. And you have bee's swarming the area in the summer. Washing of bottles & cans should be required. Some one should be there to check everyone for a couple of weeks-after that I would think spot checking to mak sure everyone is complying would do. Or I would suggest hiring a professional to come and spray the area. When a Bee lands where it has been sprayed by a professional, they die with in a minute- drastically reducing the number of bee's in the area of the recycle bins are.

Disposing of Sharps/needles

The transfer station does not really have a safe method for disposal of sharps/needles. They suggest sharps be put into a plastic laundry detg bottle and thrown into the hopper. I would think they would then be squished the bottles broken up, causing exposed sharps mixed in with the trash for another facility down the road to have to deal with.

I thank you for considering the above changes to make the transfer station a safer place for all to use.

She also had her work phone number here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will it turned out they were haven a meeting on Thursday the 21 of May, was Deb told about the meeting to take place when she dropped off her letter? No she was not!

Did anyone call to say, we are haven a meeting on the 21 , if you and if you know of any other concerned residents of Charlestown that would like to come to the Select board meeting? No they did not!

Heres what was put in the paper on Friday the 22 of May :

Select board members addressed a letter from resident Deborah Walker concerning issues with the transfer station at their bi-monthly meeting last night.

Quote of- Transfer station supervisor Keith Weed explained to board members that building a ramp would push the bins out an estimated 6 to 8 feet into the parking lot. The way the recycling bins are, there's no way to have a ramp and have them still be indoors, Weed said. Quote.

Will I'm not sure how the bins would end up being pushed out in to the parking lot, when the ramps would be part of the steps on the side of the bins. You sure can't put a ramp in the back of them, seen that there is a wall there. Maybe he needs to go to a Construction 101 class.

The board memebers decided that having attendants assist handicapped individuals at the transfer station will be more immediately effective and a lot less expensive to do. Will most of the time you never see any of the transfer station attendants any where around when you go there.

Heres what I have to say, to the Charlestown Selectman: Y'all need to remember we the people of Charlestown. Can put you in the unemployment line if you don't want to listen to us!

And it sure does look like high time we have some new Selectman's in office to me.

Just maybe I'll be one of them!

With spring being here, our Charlestown Recreation Department. Has gotten there outdoors sports season underway.

They are currently fielding seven baseball and six softball teams. That gives them a grand total at this time, of 120 children that are participating in Baseball and Softball this year.

Their two major Baseball teams just recently attended a three pitch tournament up in West Lebanon. The two teams sure did very will for them selves. There was a total of sixteen teams in the tournament.

Both of the Charlestown teams made it all the way to the playoff round. The Green team undefeated to win the over all tournament.

You know there sure was some real happy and excited, Baseball players. With big smile's on their faces. And very proud parents at that tournament.

Congratulations Charlestown Teams!!

We sure are very proud of you!!
