New Hampshire Home, Events & Relocation Information by Dale-God Bless America: Inspector in Claremont, NH

The Fort at No.4 Real Estate Recovery Charlestown New Hampshire, when you are visiting the State's of New Hampshire and Vermont, you'll sure want to be sure to make time to come and visit the Fort at No.4 here in Charlestown, New Hampshire.

Fort

This here is the first full season we have had at the Fort at No.4 History Museum and Historical Education Center since 2007. It had to close back in 2007 because the Fort had ran out of money. Then last year 2010 we were able to re-open the Fort for part of the season. We have been holding events in order to get the Fort at No.4 back on to its feet. We have been working on areas of the Fort which in the pass had been let to run down. One of the first things which was done, there was a new Director appointed of the Fort, there were all new Board Members elected.

There have been many folks coming to visit us at the Fort at No.4 this year. Which its sure has mighty nice to have them.

Thank you mighty kindly to all the folks that have been coming to tour the Fort, and helping to keep the Fort at No.4 open!

The Fort at No.4 Real Estate Recovery Charlestown New Hampshire, I'm one of the Volunteers at the Fort at No.4, if you have any question about the Fort, please feel free to e-mail me.

Blow is a video that I did, in order to take folks on a little tour of part of Lieutenant Isaac Parker Province House that stands on the left after you walk through the Palisade Gate and the Lean-to which was John Johnson’s at the Fort at No.4.

Back in the 1740's the Town of Charlestown, New Hampshire came to life, first known as No.4. It was not at all an easy life for folks back then. But the folks learned to overcome many hardships of their daily lives.

Fort Watch Tower

The Fort at No.4 Real Estate Recovery Charlestown New Hampshire, Lieutenant Isaac Parker was one of the first settlers to arrive at the Northernmost British settlement named No.4 which was 30 miles from its nearest neighbor. It was a mighty uneasy peace that existed in does days of the 1740's, between Englandand France. You see the settlement of No.4 was near two different major invasion routes for an enemy that was moving South from Canada by the Black Riverand the Connecticut River.

He was an eminent military man, and was second-in-command at the Fort at No.4. Here's something that I just learned last night as I was studying an old map of this area, on the map the Fort was actually called Stephens Fort, one of the three Farnsworth brothers was named Stephen, and he was one of the original proprietors. I'm go to have to do some more looking to this, seeing that this is the very first time I have seen or heard of the Fort at No.4 being called that. As to when the Fort had originally started with that name and stopped, and then started being called the Fort at No.4.

Fireplace

The Fort at No.4 Real Estate Recovery Charlestown New Hampshire, Lieutenant Isaac Parker was also a trusted public servant, and a much respected businessman. The Parker Province House located at the Fort at No.4 today, was constructed in the memory of Barbara Randall Chase. I’m planning on looking up information about her, is another project which I’ll be doing.

On the 19th of April 1746 Indians burnt the mills, and captured Lieutenant Isaac Parker, Stephen Farnsworth and John Spafford, which was the miller. The three men had gone out with a team of four oxen in order to fetch some boards for Lieutenant Isaac Parker's province house that he was building in the northeast corner of the Fort. The oxen were found dead and the three men were missing, they had been taken to Canada. Eighteen months later the men obtained their freedom. Captain Humphrey Hobbs set out on the 24th of June 1748 with a force of forty men for Fort Shirley that was located in Heath, Massachusetts. Then on the 26th of June the group was suddenly attacked by a large body of Indians that were led by a half-breed by the name of Sackett, who spoke English and was very well known to the English.

Cannons

The Fort at No.4 Real Estate Recovery Charlestown New Hampshire, The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle concluded King George's War on the 18th of October 1748. In 1757 regular and provincial soldiers moved in and out of this area. One Hundred of Lieutenant Colonel John Goffe's men were stationed here.

New Hampshirewas at this time starting to take over the supplying men for the western frontier that Massachusetts had been maintaining. In August, a party of Indians killed Asahel Stebbins and took his wife prisoner, along with Lieutenant Isaac Parker, and Mr. David Hill. All three were later returned. During the winter, Charlestownwas garrisoned with one hundred regular troops under the command of Captain Charles Chuikshanks. Then in the early spring the village of Charlestownhad an outbreak of smallpox. According the Journal of William Heywood of the New York Historical Society, from the 11 of March to the 28th of April 1759, 32 men, women and children came down with smallpox, and five ended up dieing.

Fort at No.4

The Fort at No.4 Real Estate Recovery CharlestownNew Hampshire, Lieutenant Isaac Parker's wife died after being ill for ten days. The Parker Province House was designated the smallpox house, and anyone that came down with the smallpox was moved to it as they became ill. In just one week, eight folks came down with the terrible pox.
