Your Private Septic System and the Soil Type on your Property Part Two

Dale Baker,The #1 Home and Commercial Properties Inspector-in NH&VT-on AR : Inspector in Claremont, NH

Your Private Septic System and the Soil Type on your Property Part Two, the EPA and other agencies, have been giving the shallow drainfield, where all soil life resides, a whole lot more credit for the job that shallow drainfields do in treating the waste from the home. This sure is another reason the EPA places such emphasis on maintaining the vadose zone, where the soil receives oxygen from the air.

Vadose Zone Diagram

This zone is essential to maintaining a healthy ecology of soil bacteria and maximizing uptake of nutrients and elimination of pathogens.

There are millions of microorganisms in the trench of a typical drainfield.

Septic System

Your Private Septic System and the Soil Type on your Property Part Two,there are billions of these organisms in the top foot or so of the soil, 98% of soil life is in the top 16 inches. Shallow, gravel less drainfields, that utilize the cleansing properties of the top few inches of the soil, as well as the roots of plants, in removing nitrogen and phosphorus, are in use throughout North America. The EPA estimates that 750,000 ahallow drainfields have been installed in America in the past 15 years.

Back in the 1890's, when folks dug their drainfield trenches by hand, shallow trenches were standard. Many drainfields used during that time were over planted with a garden. Which assured the plants a constant supply of nutrients and water. At times when the systems were loaded with more effluent than it could handle, ponding occurred above ground.

With the advent of the backhoe, and its deep digging capacity, trenches became deeper, and out of sight, out of mind. Less ponding, and also less cleansing action from the top six inches of the soil. Things seem to have came full circle, but with the technical advantage of leaching chambers and pressure dosing. Heres something of interest, the standard distance thats required between typical gravel filled trenches is the distance thats necessary for a backhoe to operate.

A Whole Different kind of Septic System Sullivan County New Hampshire Part 2

A Whole Different kind of Septic System Sullivan County New Hampshire Part 2, why think about installing a Composting Toilet, for your new construction home, or if your needing to replace, your existing private septie system. Essentially a composting toilet is used to divert excrement from the wastewater mix. In some State's this could mean by installing a composting system, the property owner could install a graywater only drainfield that is 35 to 40 percent smaller than a full sized one, saving the owner mony and preserving landscpe around their home.

Septic System

Daily indoor water use pattern for a single family home

Daily use

Peak wastewater flows for a single family home

Wastewater flows

There are many other reasons a property owner may want to install a composting toilet including these:

  • Poor soil drainage or geological conditions do not allow a regular septic system.

  • High groundwater or it would be to near streams, or a shoreline may limit what can be installed.

  • Water is way to expensive or just not unavailable for flushing a toilte.

  • An undersized or failing septic system needs to be supplemented.

  • The ecological awareness prompts the desire for a non-polluting system.

A Whole Different kind of Septic System Sullivan County New Hampshire Part 2, in the current form of available composting toilet systems are not a flush and forget technology. They require a consciousness of whats put into the toilet (please be sure to always use non toxic chemicals) some maintenance, well thought out site area, and installation, and in some case's extra electricity for operating fans and heaters.

Some folks love them, and some folks hate them, mostly from their experiences of one particular brand of system. Some systems have been poorly installed, by the instsller. One of the most common installation mistakes by a installer, is siting the system in to cold of a place( a unheated basement, is one example), and then theres the systems that have been installed that are too small for the usage they'll get.

A Whole Different kind of Septic System Sullivan County New Hampshire Part 2, a composting toilet systems can range from a little ole 7 gallon composters for boats to a large aerated two bin system, that can serve more than a 100 folks daily. They are most prevalent in coastal cottages in Scandinavia, as well as in Vietnam and Mexico. In Vietnam and Mexico. There are more than 100,000 twin bin style composting toilet systems.

There are no reports of composting privys being used on a wide scale until the 1950's, when the Democratic Republic of Vietnam initiated a five year plan of rural hygiene and a large number of anaerobic composting privys were built. These privys, known as the Vietnamese Double Vault, consisted of two above ground water tight vaults, for the collection of the humanure. I got to see many of these when I was in Vietnam.

Composting toilt systems, technology varies widely, but the typical components of them are the same.

Some things to consider, when taken your pet family member on vacation with you!

Don't say its so, vacation can't be over yet!

Your going to want to make sure your pst family members are up to date with all their vaccinations. Make sure your pet has a collar and a tag on, just in case they get out and disappear. Now if your going to be gone for a bit of time, its sure not at all a bad idea to take along a copy of your pet's vaccines and have a notebook with any medications written in it, that they are on. Just in case they should get sick while your all away haven fun. If you should have an older pet family member, that has medical conditions it sure is a real good idea to find a veterinarian in the area Y'all will be. Before you leave home, so your not stressing looking for a place if your pet ends up geting sick.
