2008 Hay Day Celebration in Farmington, NH

Hay day in Farmington NH

Central Ave. Farmington New HampshireIn times of yesteryear, many farming communities would gather together and help one another to harvest the various crops grown in the community. This was long hard work that was commonly done by all members of the family, the old fashioned way. Often times at the end of the harvest, people would gather together and have a celebration to express gratitude toward one another and simply to celebrate the "fruits" of their labor. Sometimes this was called harvest day. In Farmington, NH we celebrate Hay Day. Having been a resident of Farmington for over 5 years now, I've been able to enjoy several of these events and must say that although they are not a result of celebrating a harvest, they are still very much a celebration of community. It's nice to go out and see the local folks who make up the community. Rub elbows, smile and even play an old fashioned game or two. Sure, you can do the more modern carnival like games, but some of the things I think are most fun are things like the hay bail toss (my favorite), Horse Shoe Tournament or best dressed Farmer contest. You know, the things you don't see or do every day; things that are not at "regular" carnivals. Heck, how can we forget the bed race? When they shut down Central Ave and people line the town square to watch teams race beds on wheels right through the center of town. This is an entire weekend event starting at 5:00pm on Friday 8/22/2008 and ending at noon on Sunday 8/24/2008 culminated with Fireworks on Saturday evening (the overwhelming crowd favorite).
