There were Logging Railroads in New Hampshire, which were actually first formed back in the 1870's as one of the means to harvest the stands of old timbers which were inaccessible to the loggers. The timber was conventionally logged by Oxen, but understandably, there was a real limit as to the distance which the Animals could be expected to pull those heavy loads of logs. The Logging Railroad was a temporary installation, and sure was often a mighty crude and lacked the construction of a foundation which was suitable for extended safe operation.

, it really didn't matter to much to the loggers, seeing they were usually using old equipment, which they operated at a mighty slow speed. plus they seldom really expected to actually operate the Railroad more than 4 or maybe 5 years at tops. Just like most things there were some exceptions, some of the Railroads which were build, plus many of today's hiking trails which are used by folks are the old Railroad roadbeds.

The locomotives which were used on the logging pikes were often geared locomotives, the Shays and the Climaxes, the engines were capable of surmounting extreme grades of as much as nine percent and could operate on tight curves. Among the conventional rod locomotives which were used by the New Hampshire loggers, were the Baldwin saddle tanks and the Portland built engines sure were common for the work at hand.
