It seems fitting that this White Mountain scenic highway has re-opened on 9-11. This is a tribute to the federal employees that repair natural and man made destruction with little fan fair or acknowledgement.

Two weeks ago Hurricane Irene dropped 14 inches of rain on the Kancamagus Highway in Lincoln New Hampshire. The rumors were we wouldn’t have this pristine stretch of federal highway open until the spring of 2012. But with Foliage knocking on the door the road was repaired and opened in two weeks time.

There was evidence in dozens of places were huge sections of highway and guard rails were washed away by the torrents of swollen streams.

If you have never taken this drive, there is no better time than leaf peeper season…the trip is 35 miles long, no commercial business or structure of any kind exists along the entire route. It is truly spectacular and unique to marvel at the scenery without a building or billboard to distract a traveler from the forest.

I took this shot last year at the peak of the foliage at one of the many rest stops – build to enjoy the views along the “KANC” check out this heart shaped tree you'll find it at the Hancock Notch Trail parking area.

If you do find yourself on the federally designated scenic highway…you will roll through the town of Lincoln NH and just before you reach the Interstate look for Alpine Lakes Real Estate…is at the only traffic light in town.

Price may not guarantee value but the abutting lots have sold this year for a lot more than the current asking price on this super location site.

South Peak at Loon Mountain Home site #42, offers the best view of any remaining undeveloped sites in the slope side resort.
