A local Marine, Lance Cpl Tyler Anderson was on his way home in Island Heights from the airport when his parents pulled off into a parking lot where there were numerous fire trucks and a Humvee waiting to escort him the rest of way.

Locals in Island Heights organized the "parade" for Tyler who had just served 7 months in Afghanistan and was coming home for 30 days of leave before heading to his next permanent duty station at Camp Pendleton in California.

He is third-generation Marine Corps, his grandfather, Ed Anderson of Toms River, served from 1958 to 1961, an uncle was in Vietnam during the 1968 Tet offensive.

Island Heights is a Borough in Ocean County, New Jersey, with a population of 1,673. Island Heights was incorporated as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on May 6, 1887, from portions of Dover Township (now Toms River Township), based on the results of a referendum held on November 18, 1886.
