| Action Alert |
| Support H.R. 6694 to Reform and Restore DPA! Contact Your Elected Officials Today. |
|
Due to the passage of H.R. 3221, privately funded downpayment assistance (DPA) is eliminated as of October 1, 2008.
The FHA Seller-Financed Downpayment Reform and Risk-Based Pricing Authorization Act of 2008 (H.R. 6694), a bi-partisan bill introduced by Congressmen Green, Miller and Shays and Congresswoman Waters in July, would overrule this move and reinstate DPA indefinitely.
Restore downpayment assistance programs for qualified homebuyers who need just a little bit of help to buy a home, stimulate the economy, stabilize home prices, and revitalize neighborhoods.
A report issued by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on September 29, 2008 confirms that The FHA Seller-Financed Downpayment Reform and Risk-Based Pricing Authorization Act of 2008 (H.R. 6694) would not cost the federal government or taxpayers any money. In fact, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that seller-financed DPA will generate $65 million over the next five years and save taxpayers $13 million next year.
Reinstating DPA could help ensure continued liquidity in the stagnating housing market by providing aid to an estimated 600,000 working-class people for home purchases next year, generating $150 billion in home sales.
In order to restore downpayment assistance programs, we need to urge Congress to pass H.R. 6694 which will revive DPA under new standards that will effectively balance the risk of potential foreclosures with the goal of increasing homeownership.
Act Now! Write your two Senators and House Representative and tell them that you support the new, bi-partisan bill H.R. 6694 to restore and reform DPA!
Tell the Story of Families Shut Out by DPA Elimination
Draw attention to the families that are left on the sidelines since downpayment assistance was eliminated on October 1, 2008. DPA critics say that those who don't come into homeownership with their own downpayment, are not DESERVING of the opportunity. Write your two Senators and your House Representative and tell a story of a family you are currently working with that is locked out of homeownership until H.R. 6694 is passed to restore DPA. Help dispel the myth that DPA homebuyers are financially unqualified, irresponsible people that are destined for foreclosure. Your elected officials need to know the truth!
