Rio Rancho is about to have another Pro sports team at the Santa Ana Star Center. Today was the office announcement of the New Mexico Wildcats professional football team. The Wildcats will play their home games at the Star Center, with the first home game being on April 26. I went to the Press Conference today and the excitement level was high as Rio Rancho Mayor welcomed the team and the league to New Mexico. The Team owners and League owners had great things to say about the community and felt that this was an important market for them to be in. The game play sound like it is fast paced. The AIFA owners stressed that they want to keep the game exciting and family friendly. You can see more about the game rules HERE. Here is the quote from the AIFA website… “The League will provide a dynamic style of play so unique and exciting that fans and communities not only enjoy, but desire the sport in any and all geographic area of the United States”.
Sounds fun, I can hardly wait!
Rio Rancho Mayor Mike Williams Welcomes the Wildcats and AIFA to New Mexico. Seated, from left to right... Steve Mascarenas - Wildcats GM and Co-Owner, Cathy Oliver-Mascarenas - Wildcats Co-Owner, Michael Mink - AIFA Co-Founder, John Morris - AIFA Co-Founder.

In the chill of the Albuquerque winter as I look through my window at the distant snow-flecked mountains, my thoughts do not turn to going on a hike, but rather to memories of trekking along the flanks of the Jemez mountains last summer.
It is one of the pleasures of living in Albuquerque, that one can take off and within thirty to sixty minutes be in a world of contrasting beauty and temperature to that of the city. Such was my experience when I joined friends on a hike to Sanchez Canyon, near Cochiti on the edge of the Bandelier National forest.
The shady paths, the fascinating flora and fauna, and the beauty of distant peaks and valleys so distracted from the challenges of the sometimes rather steep gradients that even now, gazing at those peaks, uninviting to me in their winter dress, my memory of the hike is one of delight.
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I'll let the pictures speak, ever a reminder to me of of the wonderful spaces to which Albuquerque gives me quick access, thus making it a great place to call home.

Getting there. I lost my directons to Sanchez Canyon but at least one other preceded me there and also found it a memorable - memorable enough to record the directions online at http://www.abqjournal.com/go/trails/trail07-15-98.htm.
