when it rained 5 inches in day. Everything was fresh and the people were few. We had the place to ourselves with a few other adventuresome types.
The Candy Dance celebration in Genoa, Nevada got a rain shower this weekend. Surely the attendees at this annual outdoor event enjoyed the cool-off as it was getting a bit warm. Showers like that make the event memorable and fresh.

Take a Day Trip To Genoa Nevada
For those looking to absorb some local history and experience one of Western Nevada’s quaintest communities, plan a day in Genoa, Nevada.
Genoa, Nevada was officially founded in 1851 by a Mormon merchant from Salt Lake City, Colonel John Reese. Touted by some to be Nevada’s Oldest Settlement, the town of Genoa is the site of the Original Mormon Fort which also was founded by Reese and recorded in the first land claim filed in the New Utah Territory as Mormon Station.
The PioneerAtmosphere has been preserved in the many historic buildings and sites throughout the town ship. These include the Genoa Town Hall, Genoa Town Park, the Genoa
Community Church, The Genoa County Courthouse and Museum, and the Mormon Station State Park and Museum.
One of the liveliest community events of the year in Genoa is the annual Genoa Candy Dance. A long lived tradition that locals love and visitors come from far and wide to experience. This Saturday, July 16, 2011, the first annual Carson Valley Wings and Willows Festival will be held in Genoa, NV, about an hour's drive south of Reno. Beginning at 8am and continuing until 8pm, everyone is welcome to tour the wetlands and learn more about the local birds, wildflowers and butterflies. Throughout the day, there will be free workshops to learn about local Carson Valley wildlife, including bears, bats, butterflies, bees, birds and much more.
The schedule of free wildlife workshops and presentations is as follows:
9am to 10am - Birding 101
10am to 10:30am - Botany 101: Identifying Wildflowers
10:30am to 11am - The Facts of the Birds & the Bees
11am to 12pm - Bears of Carson Valley
12pm to 12:30pm - Agriculture in Carson Valley
12:30pm to 1pm - What Birds Can Tell Us
1pm to 1:30pm - Butterflies of Carson Valley
2pm to 2:30pm - Invaders Among Us (identifying and managing weeds)
2:30pm to 3pm - The Basics to Building a Backyard Bird Habitat
3pm to 4pm - Invaders of Nevada's Waters
4pm to 5pm - Things That Go Bump in the Night (owls and bats)
5pm to 7pm - Paint Out Exhibit
Tours of the wetlands as well as walking tours will be available beginning right at 8am. Prices are very reasonable. You can purchase tickets online early for a discount here. The schedule for tours throughout the day is:

The Wild Animal Infirmary of Reno (WAIF) takes in injured wild animals, nurses them back to health and releases them back into the wild. WAIF will be on hand at the festival to release birds-of-prey back into the wild. In addition to the tours and workshops, all festival attendees will be able to enjoy family-friendly arts and crafts, reptile, raptor and beehive exhibits, food, live music and much more.
