Okay so I am a proud mama. A week ago my son Jonathan graduated from Bard College with a major in mathematics.
Because of the existing economic climate this crop of college graduates could be facing a tough time however I suspect this could be a character building period. A time when things are not just handed to you, and more decision making will go into the choices made.
So congratulations and best wishes to all you 2010 graduates and best wishes with finding a job.
And Jonathan one last instruction put that math degree to good use!
Spoken like a proud mama.

Bard College the Annandale-on-Hudson Community in Red Hook NY
The private liberal arts college, Bard is located in the Annandale-On-Hudson community in the town of Red Hook, NY.
Bard was originally founded in 1860 and was then known as St. Stephens College.
The college's history is well documented and does make a good read.
This Annandale-on-Hudson community is a very interesting place, however this blog post will concentrate on the impact it has on the entire Red Hook Community.
I consider Red Hook more of a bedroom community since most of the residents have to go some place else for work. The economic impact of Bard on the Red Hook community is great. I would consider Bard along with the Red Hook School District the largest employers in town. The contribution made is more than just the benefits that flow directly to employees, but also those derived by the small businesses that provide services to the college. Another example of this economic multiplier effect is found in the visitors to Bard who stay in the local motels and B&BS and who eat in the local restaurants.
Another major impact that Bard College and the Annandale-on-Hudson community has had on Red Hook, NY is its cultural contribution. Bard has The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts where you can attend numerous events throughout the year. Each year, there is the Bard Summerscape program featuring dance, theater, film and opera, as well as the Bard Music Festival. Leon Botstein the President of the College is also a Grammy nominated (2006) Conductor who heads the American Symphony Orchestra.
There is also the Hessel Museum which sponsors lectures and exhibits.
Academic
Bard also has a Bridge Program to give high school students a head start on college, if they qualify for the program.
Real Estate
Bard has expanded over the years and local companies have been involved with the construction of new buildings and dorms.
The impact on real estate is also felt in others ways. Each year, students seeking off-campus housing call the local real estate offices looking for homes and apartment rentals.
Then, there are the incoming staff looking for homes to buy in Red Hook and others who are moving on, looking to get their Red Hook homes sold quickly.
Community Services
The Bard community also engages in community service. One such initiative that brings the Red Hook community and the Bard community together is that of the Community Garden.
Over the years, there have been the usual town/gown issues that are almost inevitable in any college town. Nevertheless, Bard has done much to foster good community relations with local residents. Just a quick consideration of the college's positive impact on the town should bring greater appreciation for our neighbors in Annandale-on-Hudson.

In my last post I took you for a ride on River Road to the point where it becomes Annandale -On -Hudson.
Annandale- On -Hudson is a hamlet in the town of Red Hook and it has its own zip-code 12504 and post office housed on the Bard Campus.
On the way, you will go by a well known historic site Montgomery Place with it's beautiful gardens and a working farm.
You will also pass some old buildings that have been restored, then you will start seeing buildings on the Bard College Campus.
Noteworthy sites include the gatehouse, Parliament of reality, Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts and Ward Manor.
Our next tour will include other buildings found on the Bard College Campus.
You could say, Annandale-On-Hudson is mostly Bard College.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the oldest tree on Bard Campus that just wouldn't die, and is admired by many. On the way to the tree you will pass the Bard Community garden.
What is the Community Garden? It is a garden from which the community at large can share in the produce, the only requirement is that you volunteer some time to help with the upkeep.
To make maintaining the garden fun, each Wednesday between 4PM and 6PM after weeding, the volunteers share a meal together. This is a great way for the regular community to get to know members of the Bard community.
The day I was there I met Sascha who does the organizing of this weekly event. She was busy weeding and was happy to tell me about the various plants, which were of interest to me as I love gardening. We chatted for a while and she also showed me the mud hut they had contructed near the garden.
I told Sascha it would be great to let more people know about the garden. Yes, I could blog about it. A few days later I received an email from her and this is what she wanted to tell the community:
Come to this Wednesday's "Weed-and-Feed"!
Kids, friends, families, Bard students/faculty ---everyone is welcome!
Come Join us in the garden to weed/work/chat this Wednesday starting at 4PM and enjoy some potlock snacks at 5:30. Nobody is expected to do any more work than is comfortable.
Feel free to bring some food for all to munch if you'd like to. most of all, we'd just like your presence so we can share the garden together.
Any questions just email the gardener at aw381@bard.edu
What a great invitation to the community at large.
