Aldi, short for Albrecht Discount, is a German supermarket chain known for it's no-frills and low-cost grocery items.

Just recently, Long Island's first Aldi opened in Bay Shore and I went there to visit. What I saw were items displayed in the boxes they were delivered in and recognizable brand names nowhere to be found. A small charge for plastic bags encourages you to bring your own (a good thing) and a quarter needs to be deposited in the slot before you have use of the shopping cart.

All in all, I'd say the timing of this grand opening is perfect, since consumers are now more open to being thrifty and saving wisely after weathering all the financial ups and downs of the last few years.
