BIKE LOCKER LOTTERY FOR BELLMORE STATION

In yet another article promoting the myriad benefits of bicycle riding, I came across this interesting incentive in the newspaper:

Until March 19th @ 4 p.m., Bellmore residents can submit an entry form to possibly win one of eight available bike lockers for a no-cost, one year lease. Lottery applications can be obtained by calling 516.812.3026

The lockers are located at the Bellmore Long Island Railroad station on the north side of the tracks and require a $40 key deposit which is refunded at the end of the year. The Dept. of Transportation provides bike lockers that are 4 ft tall, 6 ft long and 3 1/4 ft deep. according to the town officials who further state that subleasing is not permitted.

The lottery will be held on April 2nd, during which time winners will be randomly selected and given access to the bike lockers the very same day.

Here are the rules for voting, they seem to be a bit different this year

•No more than ten percent of total votes per category from the same IP address will be counted in the final audit. Any votes above and beyond will be discarded during the final vote tally.
•Any individual or organization found employing third-party resources, whether domestic or abroad, for the purpose of generating fraudulent votes, either automatically or manually, will be immediately disqualified. The names of all of the disqualified individuals or businesses will be printed in the each week of the Best of L.I. edition of the Long Island Press on January 12, 19 and 26 of 2012 and prohibited from participating in all future Best of Long Island Contests

The official Voting Period begins October 1, 2011 and ends December 15, 2011 at 11:59 p.m.

I decided to do an Open House on my South Bellmore waterfront property today with the full realization that the likelihood was, there would be little to no traffic on this absolutely beautiful Memorial Day weekend. After a brutal winter and a water logged spring, people were champing at the bit to have something to celebrate. With events all over Long Island commemorating the reason for this holiday, those who died in the service of this country, there was no shortage of places to go. All you needed was some gas in your car and a willingness to deal with the traffic to get there.

I got unexpectedly lucky. Forget about foot traffic into my listing, there was little vehicular traffic on the streets anywhere in town. I decided finally to get some air and possibly take a short walk down the street to get some exercise. As I approached my car, to put some things away, I looked up in response to a cacophonous sound that made me jump just a little. There, above me, in perfect formation were a few of the planes from the Bethpage Federal Credit Union air show at Jones beach.

Reaching for my camera, which these days has a semi permanent perch in my passenger seat, I had to change lenses to try to capture anything of the show before it disappeared into the ether. Though I missed the best shots, I did manage to get a few on their last run.

Tomorrow, on what was originally called Decoration Day, I will take a few moments to reflect, in grateful appreciation, on all those who fought valiantly and died to keep us free. There is no greater gift. God bless them all.
