Have you wondered what goes on at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory? If you have never visited, you are in for a treat - whether you paid attention in biology class or not!

This 121-year old institutional gem is considered a sanctuary by the researchers who visit, work and live there. It's home to world class study on cancer, neuroscience, plant biology, quantitative biology and bioinformationatics and genomics.

But you don't have to be qualified to do DNA research to visit and enjoy some of the most beautiful, natural acreage on Long Island.

Beginning in mid-March, the Lab offers:

• Saturday morning walking tours of the campus from 10 a.m. - noon
• Evening concerts
• Free public lecture programs

One don't-miss event is Labapalooza! an evening of music, art, cocktails and a tasting dinner, on April 9. Many home sellers hit the "pause" button during December, and would-be sellers decide to wait until January to put their house on the market. They feel the hassle of keeping the house clean while getting ready for the holidays is just too much. In my opinion, that is a mistake!

Here's why:

1. People who are "just looking" are at the mall, shopping. Real buyers are out there now, including relocation buyers who are typically the best buyers. You will definitely have fewer showings during the holidays but they will be people serious about buying. So it's actually less work for you with a bigger potential payoff.
   
2. Festive decorations increase the warmth and appeal of your home. People can imagine themselves entertaining and celebrating with friends and family.
   
3. January typically slows down since people are less likely to venture out in the freezing cold.

The MLSLI data prove it! A comparison shows that Fall/Holiday Market has more sales than the Early Spring market - and December is continuing the trend. For example, in 2010, in the Four Harbors area:

• Cold Spring Harbor School District (includes Lloyd Harbor, plus Laurel Hollow, Lloyd Neck): 31 homes went under contract in the Fall/Holiday timeframe compared to 19 homes in the Early Spring.
  
• Huntington Harbor (Huntington, Huntington Bay): 96 homes went under contract in the Fall/Holiday timeframe compared to 75 homes in the Early Spring.
  
• Northport Harbor (Centerport, Northport, Asharoken, Eatons Neck): 57 homes went under contract in the Fall/Holiday timeframe compared to 32 homes in the Early Spring.

Data for 2009 show the same pattern.

More proof: This week I put the first house under contract for December in the Cold Spring Harbor school district. I listed it in November and put it under contract with my own buyer in 24 days!

If I were ready to sell my home...I would list today. The "most wonderful time of the year" could net you the best gift ever - a contract!

During the 19th Century on Long Island, turkeys were hunted to near extinction. In 1992 a gentlemen by the name of Mark Lowery helped reintroduce turkeys back to Eastern Long Island NY. Today our fine feathered friends are thriving. If your looking for some really good tasting turkey, Laura and I suggest trying Zorn's in Bethpage Long Island NY..this is a Long Island Landmark that has been around since 1940.

Feng Shui and New York. Sometimes I believe they just go together. There is so much beauty both in New York City and on Long Island it's never difficult to decide where to go for this Feng Shui Consultant.

FINALLY, days of Spring. Some warm weather and much needed sunshine are precious days to be enjoyed. I spent one day recently in the lovely North Shore Long Island Town of Cold Spring Harbor-right next to Huntington Long Island New York which I've written about before.

Cold Spring Harbor has its own charm. It sits right on the Long Island Sound and has beach spots (primarily for residents), unique homes and a wonderful Main Street with quaint and wonderful shops and items you're not able to find anywhere else.

IT ALSO HAS A ROCK. Something I somehow missed on my other "adventures" in Cold Spring Harbor Long Island. Some other special things I love about Cold Spring Harbor is that my favorite astrologer is there, Robert Cook. It is also a place where a singer who's music I love and have been listening to and watching him performs also plays in this town on occasion-Jim Dawson. I have been going to his concerts since I was 17 and am STILL doing it now!
