Get Set for Spring in Fleetwood NY 10552

Winter never really arrived and here comes spring, hopefully! For our realtor Rainmaker friends, this is a hopeful sign that sellers will sell, buyers will warm up to buy and banks will lend -- yeah right. Some tips are below for homeowners or sellers who need to spruce up their homes as this wierd winter wanes.
Meantime, those of us who help make "clean houses sell faster," did not have our usual customers with water damage. By this time of year, we usually are helping clean-up flooding from frozen pipes, ice dam leaks and other issues that have plagued home owners and sellers for the past four cold winters. We've had lots of work, but those were fire-related and mold mitigations after the historic wet summer and fall last year.

And, now it's time for Spring Cleaning...in MARCH!
So, we are joining local plumbers, craftsman and other service professionals who are on-call, to help homeowners and home sellers get ready for warmer weather. We are a 24 hour on-call service for emergencies in traumatic fire and water damages, of course.
However, we also clean carpets and draperies as well as upholstery. In fact, we can help preserve and prolong the life of your carpet. If it's had its day in the sun, though, contact our friend and flooring pro, "The Flooring Girl" Debbie Gartner.
With proper regular care, you can add years to the life of your carpet and help to retain its original appearance. The most important thing you can do is vacuum thoroughly and frequently, particularly in high-traffic areas.

GOT MOLD? Yeah, that wet, icky smell from ours or a parent's basement that we love to hate. You don't even want to go down there to do laundry, or find those holiday decorations. With historic rains and freak snow in the northeast this year, we've had more than our fair share of mold growth in homes and businesses in Fleetwood NY 10552.

Mold is everywhere...on forest paths with the bambis -- that we like to hike in the fall, past the cute mushrooms growing under trees and such. We just don't want it indoors with us. Most mold in most homes or businesses can just be removed, especially in small amounts -- like on a back basement wall that stays damp throughout the year. There are lots of waterproof paints and epoxys to use after the water is stopped, but first you should:
1. Call a plumber or your landscaper and drying solutions professional and stop the water source. Then, we'll come in and get your structure dry and mold free. Afterwards, you can install French drains around the outside of a home or business, put in a good dry well, an effective sump pump in a lower level, or basement, with a generator -- if you lose power more the once per year -- and a great dehumidifier (dehu).
NOTE: Set your "dehu" below 60 RH (for relative humidity) in your damp room(s). In the summer when it's more humid, set it at 50-55 and get one that you don't have to empty daily -- they shut off and that will do you no good. Some have a small hose that feeds into your sump pump or lower level drain. We've cleaned flooded homes where a dehu ran for a week, did not shut off and the water was pouring out and being dehumidified in a vicious cycle of water.
2. Remove / kill the mold - but don't just call a handyman or your local contractor, and have them ripping out your walls for no reason. Staining from moisture on walls does not mean you have mold. "The appearance of visible mold" is all we can say at my company, Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon. We can often see what appears to be mold on your walls and even ceilings, although we professionally remediate the stuff. Only those lab professionals in white coats with petri dishes can officially tell you and us that it's truly mold and what type.
3. Servpro and other certified mold mitigators don't do "demolition" unless we have to do so, and we are fully Water Certified professionals with The Clean Trust. In fact, if there are health issues with your children, someone elderly in the home, or a business with a history of flooding, we may suggest that you independently call an Indoor Environment Professional (IEP) to test for mold spores and levels. Our Servpro does not contract with or subcontract with IEPs because it is a conflict of interest. We work independently and have great respect for one another. Many IEPs recommend Servpros because of our 45 year old reputation in mold mitigation.
Our Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon offers names and numbers that home and business owners can call directly. My company's initial walk through for mold or a water damage is free -- that's after all the rain and flooding, plus a freak October snow storm / melt in Fleetwood NY this year. So, the IEP gives us a "menu" for mold removal and we follow it and are "tested" at the end, to make sure your levels are safe and we have done the work correctly, based on industry standards and guidelines.
Excessive amounts of mold and certain types of mold may present health concerns. Water damages can cause mold growth in your home or business, therefore it is important to have your water damages cleaned promptly and professionally.
I am a local business owner and member of the Westchester women's group, First Fridays...look us up. I am on call 24 hours, through the holidays.

There is nothing more disheartening than walking into the lower level of your home, and find yourself knee-deep in icky water. You may even walk into a client's property and realize that a flood has occurred -- that "mildew smell." It is not healthy to walk into this water for ANYONE, if they 1) don't have good rubber / water tight boots and/or 2) don't have a Hepatitis - B shot.
Keep in mind that water runoff from the street or your pristine front and back yards can carry E-coli, bacteria and oil from cars and trucks. It can be harmful to your health. So, the first lesson is to stay out of the water and call your plumber, or companies like ours, for help.
Water damage professionals have the equipment and experience necessary to handle the most challenging situations. At my company, we concentrate on service and background check our well-trained crews...for your peace of mind. Our Servpro near Fleetwood as well as companies like ours work all hours, and we are on call around-the-clock.
Calling your contractor or handyman, who is not trained in drying a structure from the inside can cause more harm than good. They are great for rebuilding any damaged walls or floors. Then, for new flooring, call The Flooring Girl, Debbie Gartner, at Floor Coverings International and she'll come by for a free quote on getting you back to normal. That's after water damage pros like us make your damage "Like it never even happened!" However, we concentrate on drying and no "demo," where walls and floors are torn out when they can be dried and saved. Also, contractors may not be certified in water damage and can't prevent mold growth. We've got to get the structure desert dry and spray for mold, to prevent this devastating result from a water or flood damage.
You will want to concentrate on safely drying, deodorizing and disinfecting the areas flooded or damaged by water. A pro should offer to come in and provide you, and your insurance company if applicable, a free verbal quote on how long the drying process will take. And, then they should begin "extracting" the water as soon as possible. The longer the water is in your structure, the more damage to flooring, walls and the structure as a whole.
Equipment Water Damage companies use
Hi-Tech Drying Equipment
Sanitizing Agents, Germicides, & Anti-Microbial Treatments
So, call in a pro, to prevent future mold growth and damage. Mold can begin growing in a humid, water damaged structure as soon as 24 to 48 hours. Many of our realtor clients call us in to "vacant properties," that may be bank owned, empty and had a recent or distant water damage -- a burst pipe last winter perhaps. So, feel free to visit our website for other tips and call for ideas on how to get dry and back to normal: www.servproofscarsdalemountvernon.com
