Students of the Freeport Public School System have received state and national recognition in their academic and athletic pursuits. Among the many academic awards was the receipt of a Gates Foundation Scholarship by one of its 2010 graduates of Freeport High School. The school system also has a student exchange program with its sister city of Waldorf Germany. The elementary schools have an extensive after school program for children. Freeport Schools also boasts the largest early childhood education center, operated at the Columbus Avenue School, in New York State.
