Is buying a house cheaper than renting? My answer - for our neck of the woods (upstate NY) would have to be "Yes". (Assuming you are finacially able to do the mortgage, taxes, insurance, upkeep, etc. ). (ok- so it's a "sorta yes").
I do know I have some rental clients who's monthly payments will be higher than the average mortgage for this area. If you're just comparing mortgage versus rent - there's no contest. You can't rent much of anything in the suburban areas for under $1,000 a month - but as long as you're not in certain high tax counties you can buy a nice little house with a monthly mortgage and taxes payment of $1,000. Maybe it won't be big and fancy - but nice.
The article that got me thinking about this question was at Inman News. They say in over 70% of the country, it's cheaper to buy than rent. What's the answer for your neck of the woods?
