Are you looking to sand and refinish hardwood floors in Mamaroneck NY?
It's amazing what a difference refinishing your hardwood flooring can make. Your floors will look brand new and you even have the option to change the color. You can go light, dark, mid tones, or red tones. It can really give your home (or room) a whole new look.
If you have hardwood underneath your carpets, we can restore the beauty of the hardwood underneath. It's amazing what a big difference this can make in your home. And, believe it or not, it is usually less expensive to refinish your floors than to recarpet. Refinishing your wood floors will also improve your home's value and it will be easier to clean and maintain.
At Floor Coverings International, we are a shop at home service. We will bring the "store to your door" so that you can see the flooring and colors in your own home and lighting and color coordinate with your paint colors and decor. When it comes to sanding and refinishing, not only we will help guide you in color selections, but we will also test out a few colors for you on your floor. This is important because every floor is different, so it's best to see what the stain will actually look like on your own floors (rather than a tiny sample).
We offer both the standard refinishing process as well as a dustless sanding system. Dustless sanding costs a bit extra, but many customers feel it's worth it, especially if they have someone with allergies in their household. We offer both oil and water based polyurethane, and we will help you understand the pros and cons on each method.
We are proud of our work, but don't rely on our word...ask our customers! We have won the Angie's list Super Service award 2 years in a row, and you can even check our google reviews online. And, we will gladly provide with a list of over 30 customers to call.
Our estimates are always free. So, when you're ready to refinish your hardwood floors in Mamaroneck NY 10543, call us at 914-937-2950 and let us "bring the store to your door."

Here's the 15th installment of some of my older flooring posts (these are from October - November 2011). At the end of this post I've added links to previous ones , in case you missed them or want to bookmark them.

3. When installing hardwood flooring, don't underestimate the importance of the subfloor. The flooring is only as good as the subfloor underneath.

Can you save your carpet after a flood in your basement? Mamaroneck NY 10543.
After the most recent storm, Irene did a number on a lot of the homes in Mamaroneck NY as well as many other areas in Westchester including Larchmont, Rye, Scarsdale, Rye Brook, Dobbs, Ferry, Chappaqua & Mt Kisco. Needless to say, we've gotten a bunch of phone inquiries on what to do.
If there is major flooding and you need to get the water out, you should be calling a restoration company such as Servpro (914-699-5181). But, if the damage is minor (e.g. just a little bit of leaking water on the carpet), you may be able to save the carpet and avoid needing to replace it.
On Sunday, I got a call from a customer in Scarsdale. We've done 2 jobs for him (and are about to do a 3rd). His damage was only minor, so I told him to pull back the carpet in the area and remove and throw away all the carpet pad...that's the part that usually develops the mold and starts to smell...and then to turn the heat down/cool it and dry it a shop vac and fans.
As a result, he was able to save the carpet we installed there a year ago, and it will only cost $265 to add back carpet pad and restretch and recut the carpet. He was thankful, especially since his insurance deductible is $2,500.
I do not want to downplay the importance of calling in the mitigation experts such as Servpro, because if you are having a major flood, they are the right ones to call, and if you have left your carpet down w/ water for too long, you may develop mold (I think it takes 48-72 hrs before that happens, but please don't quote me on it). Often a "better safe than sorry" approach is the one to take, but peeling back the carpet and removing the carpet pad can often save you a lot of headache and hassle.
Please pass this on to your friends who may benefit from this info. As much as I love to replace carpet, I love helping my customers save money when they can easily avoid it.

Did your basement flood from the most recent storm in Westchester NY? Many low lying areas of Westchester, got hit hard, including Mamaroneck, Rye, Scarsdale, Bronxville, Larchmont, New Rochelle, Dobbs Ferry, Mt Kisco, Peekskill . We've had a lot of customers calling due to drenched carpets. And, if you don't remove them soon enough, they really start to smell...and if they sit too long they could develop that forbidden word...mold. Yuck!
Sometimes, the water damage is covered by insurance, especially if it was due to an electrical failure. Usually, the insurance will compensate you for replacement value of what you had. We've had many customers who were so disgusted by the smell and ordeal associated with flooded carpets, that sometimes, they just never want to go back. Instaed, they would prefer a water proof solution.
Types of flooring that are water proof or water resistant...good options for basements that flood.
1. Tile flooring - Tile is probably the closest you can get to water proof flooring. It's also generally the most expensive surface, but once it's down, it basically stays put. So, if you don't want to worry about redoing your floors after a flood, tile could be a good option, especially if your floor is level and smooth. If your floor isn't level or smooth, you may want to consider an alternative to avoid spending a lot of money in floor prep.
2. Rubber flooring - Gym flooring or rubber tile holds up extremely well to water. If you want the look of a gym, it's a perfect option as it gives you some cushion for your feet. Many of the rubber tiles are interlocking. So, if you do have a flood, you can pick them up yourself and just let the water drain and then easily reconstruct afterwards.
3. Sheet vinyl - Sheet vinyl is water resistant. If you have a short flood or small amount of water, it will usually survive. If the water is sitting for too long, it could damage the adhesive and parts could come loose.
4. Vinyl plank and tile/luxury vinyl - This is incredibly durable and will usually survive any flood, especially if it's adhered to the floor with a waterproof adhesive (as most are). Luxury vinyl, as the name implies, looks much nicer than sheet vinyl and costs more. Often it will cost a bit less than ceramic tile. If your basement is uneven, this is probably a much more cost efficient option vs. tile as less floor prep is needed.
5. Linoleum - Many customers get linoleum confused w/ sheet vinyl. Linoleum comes in sheets, but it's a green product that is more expensive than sheet vinyl. And, the rolls are usually only 6.5 ft wide so you may have a bunch of seams. If you are looking for a less expensive solution, try sheet vinyl; if going green is important to you, then consider linoleum.
6. Vinyl Composite Tile (VCT) - These are less expensive vinyl squares that are 12 x 12". You often see them in schools, grocery stores or Chinese take-out restaurants. They often sort of look marbly and they come in many colors - and sometimes you can even make cool designs with these squares. These tiles are pretty water resistant too. It's a more industrial look and feel...which is fine for some basements.
Flooring surfaces to avoid if you have flooding and excessive moisture in the basement
1. Carpet - Most carpet will not survive a flood. Sometimes, if you lift it up quick enough and remove all the carpet pad, this can be salvaged and then you just need a "pad and restretch." While most carpet will not survive floods, it is the least expensive surface and it can tolerate uneven basements, so many opt to put carpet in the basement to save money - at least in the short run.
2. Hardwood flooring - Obviously, hardwood does not hold up well to water
3. Laminate flooring - many get this mixed up with vinyl flooring. Laminate flooring is made w/ wood, so it is NOT waterproof.
4. Cork flooring - Cork acts like a sponge for water, so this will not survive a flood
Often, basement flooring comes down to trade-offs. What is most important to you - the look and feel, the cost, how resistant it is to water? Often, these are in conflict, so you need to choose what is best for your basement and your budget. All basements are different. Some are flat and smooth (which makes any flooring work better); others are uneven, cracked and sloping. All these factors are important considerations. It's often helpful to bring in an expert who can help find the best flooring solution for your basement.
