New York City Hall, located in the Civic Center, Manhattan, is the oldest City Hall in the whole of the United States. Built in 1812, the building is almost 200 years old! This beautiful, antique French Renaissance Revival architecture is regarded as one of the most precious piece of architecture in New York, and both its exterior and interior has been classified as a New York City Landmark.

2 rooms of the building are most well-known: the Blue Room and Room 9. The Blue Room is where government officials have traditional given press conferences to the media, and is also used for the signing of bills. Room 9 shares none of the prestige of the Blue Room, however – it is the press room for reporters, where most of the behind-the-scenes work is done here.

The building is surrounded by many other governmental buildings, such as the Manhattan Municipal Building. Increasingly, however, many older commercial buildings have been converted into residential buildings. This area also has its fill of cultural landmarks such as St Paul’s Chapel and St Peter’s Church.

The Subway station, the neighborhood, runs through here as well, providing easy access for governmental officials and residents alike to the Civic Center of Manhattan.
